Mari Selvaraj wrote and directed the political thriller Maamannan, produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin and released in 2023 in Indian Tamil. Along with Udhayanidhi Stalin, Vadivelu, Fahadh Faasil, and Keerthy Suresh, the film also features an ensemble cast. On June 29, 2023, Maamannan became available to the public, with reviews ranging from unfavorable to favorable. Maamannan is an MLA from an oppressed group who rose through the ranks in Salem, Tamil Nadu, starting out as a party cadre. Athiveeran “Veera”, Maamannan’s son and Adimurai practitioner, is separated from his father as a result of a caste attack he suffered as a young man by members of the area’s ruling community, which left him physically and mentally damaged.
Rathnavelu, who is a member of the ruling group and serves as the party’s district secretary, is also a member of Maamanan. Rathnavelu and Maamannan are often at odds due to their tough and combative demeanor. One day, after a disagreement and after seeing his associates and other party members disrespect his father Sundaram, Rathnavelu yells at them, forcing Maamannan and Veera to go from pawns to players. The film is being produced by Udhayanidhi under the name of Red Giant Movies. The music is composed by AR Rahman on his debut collaboration with Selvaraj.
