In 1994, MacKenzie and Jeff quit their jobs at DE Shaw to focus on their business ventures. According to her, she drove from New York to Seattle while Jeff sat in the passenger seat, typing up the business plan for Amazon. Initially, Amazon started as an online bookstore in their garage. MacKenzie negotiated Amazon’s first freight contract while working at a local Starbucks coffee shop. She also served as the company’s bookkeeper and administrator. As the business grew, MacKenzie stepped away from office work to focus on her family and her writing career.

MacKenzie has a talent for writing since she was a child. It is said that she wrote a 142-page chapter book “Bookworm” when she was six years old, but the book was later lost in a flood. In 2005, MacKenzie published her first novel, “The Trials of Luther Albright”. The book became a hit, and the Los Angeles Times named it “Best Book of the Year”. She also won the American Book Award in 2006. In an interview with Vogue in 2013, Scott mentioned that it took her 10 years to complete her first novel because she was busy raising four children and helping her husband run his thriving business. In 2013, she published her second novel, “The Trap”.

MacKenzie received a 4% stake in Amazon (worth about $38 billion) in her divorce settlement. Shortly after the divorce settlement was reached, she signed the Giving Pledge. The Giving Pledge initiative was launched in 2010 by business tycoon Bill Gates, his wife Melinda, and billionaire investor Warren Buffett. It is a commitment to donate at least half of your money. In July 2019, Scott donated $1.68 billion to 116 nonprofits, universities, community development groups, and legal organizations. She reportedly donated $5.7 billion in 2020 to help those severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. She also donated to a number of racial justice charities. Her generous donations put her second on the list of the 50 Americans who donate the most to charity, according to the annual ranking of The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
