Madonna and husband-to-be Sean Penn met on the set of her iconic ‘Material Girl’ music video, and while her marriage to the actor was occasionally rocky, Madonna truly adored him, the video’s director revealed in the documentary.

“She was genuinely in love with him, but it seemed like the attraction between the two of them was fueled by the public,” said Sharon Oreck, the director who brought them together. “He was the new movie star, she was the new rock star and the public demanded they come together.”

Also in the documentary, Madonna was also candid about losing her mother to breast cancer when she was just 5 years old. The Queen of Pop had to grow up faster than those around her, she said, to fully understand what happened to her mom.

“It was simply the biggest event of my life,” she said. “It was a piece of my heart that was ripped out.”

Madonna’s documentary is available to watch, but her biopic is still in the works. In November 2024, the singer asked fans to give their opinion on whether the dramatic story of her life should be a film or a series – and the answers were divided.

Her longtime friend, Debi Mazar, suggested a third secret option: a memoir, “so no one would misunderstand.”
