dispute
convicted of murder
On the morning of February 11, 2022, at around 1:30am, police were informed of a car on fire near a tree on the central reserve of the A46 near Six Hills, Leicestershire. At the time, the person reporting the collision was unable to determine the make of the car or whether anyone was inside. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service were also called and when the fire was extinguished officers made the devastating discovery of two bodies. The bodies were later identified as those of Saqib Hussain, a passenger in the car, and his cousin Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin, who was driving.
When police investigated the accident, it soon became apparent that the deaths were not a tragic accident. The incident was immediately linked to a 999 call made by Hussain before the accident, in which he distressedly told the operator that he and his friend were being followed by two cars and one wearing a balaclava (face mask). ), they tried to stop him, they knocked him off the road, they tried to kill him. The call was interrupted by a car collision. As the murder investigation unfolded, it emerged that Hussein was having an extramarital affair with Mahek’s mother, Anseline Buhari, and that Mahek was aware of the relationship. Inquiries revealed that Anslin Buhari, who is married, had made the decision to end his relationship with Hussein but was unable to accept it. This allegedly led to him threatening to tell Ansreen Bukhari’s husband about the affair and sharing sexual images and videos of Ansreen Bukhari. During the trial, Anslin revealed that she threatened to report Hussain to the police before confiding the information she had received to Mahek.
Messages uncovered during the investigation revealed that Mahek told her mother that she would beat Hussain. One of the messages read,
I’ll let him get jumped so he won’t know what day it is”.
The investigation found that, over time, Anslin offered to repay Hussain money he had spent on her, around £3,000. Mahek and her friends arranged for Hussain to meet Ansreen and Mahek Bukhari in a Tesco car park in Hamilton, Leicester, to get the money. Unbeknownst to Hussain, the meeting was scheduled to be attended by five other defendants: Raees Jamal, Rekan Karwan, Sanaf Gulamustafa, Ameer Jamal and Natasha Akhtar. This led to the defendant driving two vehicles (an Audi TT and a Seat Leon) to the parking lot in the early morning of February 11, 2022. None of the defendants had any money with them at the time of the meeting. CCTV footage shows Hussain and Ijazuddin arriving at the car park in a Skoda Fabia at around 1.17am and then immediately driving off again. It is believed this was after they saw other cars and people there. Two minutes later, the video shows a Seat Leon and Audi TT also leaving the parking lot.
Mahek and her friends called Hussain several times in the car and after these calls Hussain dialed 999. An investigation of the accident scene by forensic collision investigators revealed that the Skoda Fabia hit a central reserve fence before hitting a tree. The impact of the collision was so severe that the vehicle was split in half and the car’s engine was detached. Hussain and Ijazuddin both died on the spot from multiple injuries. Both died before the fire broke out. A detailed police investigation found that a tracker was installed on the rented Audi TT, which showed that the car reached speeds of 100 mph during the chase. The Skoda was traveling at an estimated speed of more than 80 mph at the time of the collision. After the accident, the tracker on the Audi TT also showed heavy braking, with the speed dropping to 62 mph. The two vehicles were then driven back to the scene of the collision, at which point the Skoda burst into flames.
The Audi and Seat were spotted continuing along the A46 before reaching a junction where two people were seen getting out of the car, believed to be checking the car for damage, before returning. No distress calls were made by any of the defendants. CCTV footage shows the defendant walking in the Gypsy Lane area of Leicester in the early hours before making his way home.
As the evidence was established, the defendants were arrested on suspicion of murdering Hussain and Ijazuddin, with the first arrest occurring hours after the collision on February 11, 2022. Footage of body abrasions from the arrests of Anslin and Maher Buhari showed they lied to police about where they went at night. After the incident, when police attended Anslin and Maher Buhari’s home address, Maher told officers they had gone to Nottingham in the evening.
After the Seat Leon and Audi TT were impounded, forensic collision investigators found damage to the front of the Seat Leon consistent with a collision with the rear of the Skoda Fabia. A wheel bracket was found in the boot of the Audi TT and a bent metal tool was found on the driver’s seat of the Seat Leon, which is believed to have been deliberately brought to the arranged meeting.
The defendants were each charged with two counts of murder. All denied responsibility, leading to a trial at Leicester Crown Court. The trial heard how all the defendants admitted being seated in a Seat Leon or Audi TT at the time of the collision. Raees Jamal admitted being the driver of the Seat Leon when the vehicle collided with the Skoda. On August 4, 2023, the trial ended and the jury reached its verdict in court. Ansling Buhari and Maher Buhari of George Eardley Close, Stoke-on-Trent, Raees Jamal of Lyndale Close, Loughborough, and Ray Kan of Tomlin Road, Leicester. ·Calvando was found guilty of murder. Sanaf Gulamustafa, of Littlemore Close, Leicester, Aamir Jamal, of Catherine Street, Leicester, and Natasha Akhtar, of Alum Rock Road, Birmingham, were all sentenced Not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter against Hussain and Ijazuddin. Mohammad Patel was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter. They have all been remanded in custody and are expected to be sentenced on September 1, 2023.
