Respected Spanish daily El Mundo reported that the arrest took place at around 5.30am on September 8 after he was accused of taking a phone from a 58-year-old man who tried to take a photo of him in the toilets of a nightclub without permission.
Rumor has it that the Brazilian-born Nunes stole his cell phone in a fit of rage and refused to return it.
The police made the arrest according to El Mundo after they were called to the club and confirmed that the footballer still had the phone in his possession.
The former Wolves player was reportedly handcuffed at the nightspot before being taken to a police station in the Madrid neighborhood of Arganzuela.
He was released a few hours later after the intervention of a lawyer.
El Mundo reported that he is expected to face charges and a trial over the incident.
A spokesman for the National Police in Madrid said: “I can confirm that a Portuguese national was arrested in the early hours of September 8 in a Madrid nightclub on suspicion of stealing another person’s mobile phone.”
Police confirmed the man arrested was born in 1998, the same year as the Man City midfielder, but said they could not comment on whether the suspect was a footballer.
A well-placed source said: “This matter will now go to trial.”
Following his alleged arrest, Nunes played in matches against Brentford, Watford and on Tuesday in the Champions League against Slovan Bratislava – which ended in a 4-0 victory.
Nunes signed for Man City from Wolves last year for a £53m transfer.
He played a total of 35 times for Pep Guardiola’s team, scoring one goal and adding six assists.
