Man Utd plan astonishing bid to bring David de Gea back on free transfer three months after releasing star

MANCHESTER UNITED are planning an embarrassing U-turn by begging sacked goalkeeper David de Gea to return on a short-term contract.

The club are worried they will be short of a goalkeeper when Cameroon No.1 Andre Onana — De Gea’s replacement — leaves for the Africa Cup of Nations in the new year.

Man Utd were caught off guard after Onana performed a U-turn on his international retirement.

The Afcon runs from January 13 to February 11, meaning the £43.8m summer signing could miss up to eight United games.

So the club are ready to turn to De Gea – after they offloaded him this summer.

The Spaniard, 32, spent 12 years at Old Trafford before leaving when his contract expired.

He has not played for another club since then.

De Gea has been offered reduced terms to stay at United, with his wages cut from £375,000 a week to £200,000 a week.

But even that deal was eventually taken off the table.

Incredibly, United also asked him not to agree to join another club until they complete Onana’s transfer.

It was seen as poor treatment for the longest-serving goalkeeper in their history and someone who had just won the Premier League’s Golden Glove.

United signed Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce for £4.3m, but Tom Heaton would be the only stopper at the club during the Afcon tournament.

Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes, who recently met De Gea in Manchester, earlier expressed his regret that the Spaniard was not given a proper send-off.

That could happen now if the player accepts a short-term deal.

Many feel that De Gea should have been retained given Onana’s form.

But former Inter Milan star Onano, 27, was the hero on Tuesday with a stoppage-time penalty save to help United beat Copenhagen 1-0 in the Champions League.
