Maharashtra launches new curriculum framework Maharashtra launches new curriculum framework

NEP 2020: The Maharashtra state government has introduced a new curriculum framework for the foundation stage of education, emphasizing the use of the child’s mother tongue as the primary medium of instruction. The curriculum emphasizes interactive activities and exploration, with the goal of students reading and writing clearly by third grade.

The basic phase covers children aged 3 to 8, which includes three years of preschool education and 1st and 2nd grade. Concerns were expressed, however, about the use of multiple languages and the lack of a more independent curriculum framework. It also emphasizes the nutrition and health of students.

SCF based on the recommendations of the National Framework Curriculum

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), tasked with preparing the State Curriculum Framework (SCF) based on the recommendations of the NCF (National Curriculum Framework), has prepared its outline for the foundation phase. The proposed draft was made public with an invitation to interested parties to provide feedback before final approval.

According to the SCF, learning in the mother tongue is more effective than understanding newer concepts in the language at that age. However, it acknowledges the unavailability of teachers in all languages and proposes a new scheme of “mobile teachers” with knowledge of the local spoken language.

According to the SCF-FS, the preschool section should not last more than 3 hours and 10 minutes per day, and grades 1 and 2 should not last more than five hours per day. With the inclusion of early childhood care and education (ECCE), which would cover the anganwadis active in the state, the SCF also includes the importance of nutrition for children.

It encourages teachers to be aware of laws such as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) and its importance. It also suggests steps to ensure children’s physical and emotional safety while providing training in good and bad touch at the primary stage.
