Manobala passed away on May 3, 2023 due to liver-related diseases. Fifteen days before his death, he felt unwell and was admitted to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. Later, he was shifted to his residence in Saligramam, Chennai. In January 2023, he underwent vascular treatment. After his death, legendary South Indian actor Rajinikanth tweeted:
I am deeply saddened by the passing away of my dear friend, renowned director and actor Manobala. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace. “
Facts/Trivia
- His family and friends affectionately called him Mano.
- Manobala is a member of South Indian actor-director group ‘Azhwarpet’, which includes Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam and Santhana Bharathi. During hard times, members of the group often stayed at Kamal’s home.
- In an interview, he revealed that he was once a smoker. His friends used to call him “Chimney” because he smoked about 200 cigarettes a day, which adversely affected his health. He also suffered from breathing problems, which affected his work. He said,
When I was at my peak as a director, I had a terrible smoking habit. They called me “Chimney” because I smoked all the time. Hindi actress Rekha tied two panparak pockets and hung them around my neck. This is done by knocking cigarette ashes into it. I smoke 200 cigarettes a day. That’s why all my bones are fragile. In fact, doctors once said that if I smoked one cigarette, I would die. That’s when I stopped. “
