The end of the first day in Ratingen was congested at the summit.

Manuel Eitel finds himself as the unexpected overnight leader in a thrilling decathlon where many of Germany’s top all-arounders are seeking to win over selectors for the host nation’s European Championships team. The 21-year-old scored 4220 points, which put him three points in front of two-time Ratingen champion Arthur Abele and put him on track to set a personal best.

Ituah Enahoro, Florian Obst, and Tim Nowak—all fellow Germans—are following closely and finish the day within 80 points of the leader. Had competitors like Dennis Hutterer, Luca Wieland, and Kai Kazmirek not been forced to quit, it would have been even more competitive.

Unsurprisingly, Eitel, who has competed for Germany in the 100m at international age-group championships, set the top time in the decathlon’s first event. Just 0.07 off the meeting record, his 10.47 time put him in the lead right away.

In second place, Enahoro posted a personal best of 10.63, while Wieland (10.84) and Abele (10.85) set season highs. In the long jump, Wieland caught up to Eitel after recording scores of 7.61 meters and 7.37 meters, respectively. Obst and Abele both jumped 7.28 meters, but Enahoro, who earlier this year had a personal best of 8.01 meters, could only manage 7.45 meters.

Following a lackluster 100-meter performance, world bronze medalist Kazmirek performed similarly poorly in the long jump, clearing just 6.92m.

Abele, who is trying to win his first decathlon since 2016, surged up the leaderboard after posting a personal best of 15.93 meters in the shot, the event’s top mark of the day. Obst finished fourth overall with a 15.54m time that was also a personal best.

Eitel set a personal best of 14.31 meters, but Wieland’s throw of 14.84 meters was enough to put him in the lead overall. Kazmirek recorded a season-best jump of 14.19 meters but soon after announced his withdrawal from the competition, citing illness.

Wieland, who can jump 2.20 meters at his best, had hoped to expand his advantage in the high jump, and it is not surprising that he was the final competitor standing. He effortlessly overcame 2.10m and 2.13m before clearing 2.01m and 2.07m. The bar was raised to 2.16m, which would have broken the meeting record, but tragedy struck when Wieland hurt his left thigh on his second attempt.

Abele surpassed 1.89m, while Eitel posted a respectable 1.92m. Thanks to his 2.04m clearing, Nowak rose in the standings. After the last competition of the first day, Eitel recorded a personal best of 49.09 in the 400 meters to retake the lead. Abele also had a good finish, moving him into second place overall with a time of 48.40.

With a time of 47.91, Enahoro outran the competition and increased his day-one score to 4199, just 21 points behind Eitel. Obst and Nowak also ran in under 49 seconds to finish the day among the top five with totals of more than 4100 points.

Abele seems to be the strongest in the events on day two out of the five guys who were grouped at the top of the leaderboard at the end of day one. Eitel, Enahoro, and Obst are fairly evenly matched in the final five disciplines, but Nowak has the chance to advance a few spots as well.

World champion Kevin Mayer, who won’t be counted in the final standings, is taking part in a small number of events at Ratingen and has been in strong form. He ran a personal best in the 100 meters (10.66), the shot put (15.86 meters), the second-best outdoor mark of his career, and the 400 meters (48.33), which was within 0.07 of his lifetime best.
