Mare Winningham and Anthony Edwards: All About the ER Costars' Relationship

When Mare Winningham started working with Anthony Edwards, she didn’t know she had met her future husband.

The couple first met in the mid-1980s, when they auditioned for A sure thing. Although they lacked roles, they ended up working together for the first time in the 1988 romance thriller. Miracle Mile.

They then continued to work together several times after that and remained friends throughout their marriages and subsequent divorces. (Winnigham has three ex-husbands: actor A Martinez, married from 1981 to 1982; actor William Maple, married from 1982 to 1996; and director Jason Trucco, married from 2008 to 2012. Edwards was married in the meantime with makeup artist Jeanine Lobell from 1994 to 2015)

The actors have acted together in films and on television for a long time. In his first project, a film from 1988 Wonderful Mile, they played lovers.

Since sharing the screen for the first time, the pair have worked together on the long-running TV show Emergency. Winningham played Dr. Amanda Lee, a woman obsessed with Edwards’ character, Dr. Mark Greene.

Winningham was “in love” with Edwards

In an interview discussing their creation of time Miracle MileWinningham revealed that she had a crush on Edwards during filming.

“I don’t remember Mare and I rehearsing,” Edwards explained of his time on the set, to which Winningham responded with a laugh, “I’m laughing because we had chemistry and I was in love with him and we had a good go so we wouldn’t had to practice it.”

They became closer during the COVID-19 pandemic

Winningham and Edward’s friendship — and romantic relationship — grew stronger during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. The couple, who both lived in New York at the same time, would often walk together.

“We’ve had some amazing walks,” he said Top Gun the actor told Fox News in April 2020. “We have family that’s with us with a young child, our godson, who’s only 19 months old, so we’ve been forming this group for the last five weeks.”

“It was really nice to get into some different rhythms and also use technology like we use today to connect with people,” he added. “We’re trying to prioritize what’s important to this life when we realize how fragile it is when a pandemic can come and take so many of us so quickly.”

They escaped in 2021

In 2021, Edwards revealed that the couple had decided to elope privately instead of having a traditional wedding. The intimate ceremony was conducted by “just the two of them and an old friend.”

“We are too old to organize a wedding,” he said Making up Anna the actor said Esquire at that time, before the praise of Winningham. “She’s just spectacular. She’s an amazing singer and she’s a wonderful actress and she’s an amazing person.”

Edwards made his Broadway debut in Winningham’s play

Edwards unexpectedly made his Broadway debut at the last minute after stepping in as a replacement – with just one hour of rehearsal time behind him!

The actor played Dr. Walker in the Tony-nominated film A girl from the northwhile his wife played her regular role of Elizabeth Laine.

In a backstage video, Edwards explained that he was two hours away from their home in Connecticut when his wife called him unexpectedly that afternoon, saying they would have to cancel the show due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

“I’m beyond impressed and proud,” Winningham praised Edwards in a backstage video. “You are fearless.”

During the final curtain call, the show’s executive producer Tristan Baker took the stage to thank the musical’s twists and turns, before asking the audience if there was a “doctor in the house,” referring to Edwards’ beloved tenure as Dr. Mark Greene on Emergency.
