Margot Robbie Honors 1964 Barbie on Red Carpet but Says She Couldn’t Pick ‘Favorite’ Barbie Style (Exclusive)

Margot Robbie returns to the 60s!

The 33-year-old actress was the epitome of elegance in retro style Barbie-an inspired look at the Gotham Awards in New York on Monday night. Robbie wore a strapless black dress and sheer cape with a bow at the neckline by Prada. Her look was inspired by the 1964 Black Magic Ensemble Barbie.

But the star – who played the doll in the hit summer film – says she couldn’t play favorites or pick her best Barbie.

“I don’t know what my favorite is,” Robbie tells PEOPLE. “But this look was Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie, a favorite Barbie look,” she reveals. “This is a 1964 Barbie and Ruth Handler said it was her favorite.”

The Wolf of Wall Street the star paired her outfit with black Manolo Blahnik open-toe heels and black leather gloves. She also clutched a gold clutch and wore pearl earrings as she walked the star-studded red carpet alongside her husband of six years, Tom Ackerley.

During promotion Barbie movie — which also starred Ryan Gosling — Robbie has worn a number of looks over the years that have referenced different Barbies.

In July, Robbie spoke to PEOPLE about collaborating with stylist Andrew Mukamal on their Barbie-inspired looks and the vision they shared when recreating each outfit.

“We’re finding Barbie references from decades past and making it real for the big Barbie fans out there, the people who actually collect those Barbies,” Robbie said at the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles. “We hope to get them excited. We combine Barbie references with great designers.”

After wearing a variety of striking pink outfits in honor of Babira ahead of the film’s release, Robbie admitted: “It’s not subtle, but it’s a lot of fun!”

Among the other stars who attended the Gotham Awards on Monday Barbie writer and director Greta Gerwig, Michelle Williams, 43, Natalie Portman, 42, Penélope Cruz, 49, Leonardo DiCaprio, 49, Carey Mulligan, 38, Bradley Cooper, 48, and Rachel McAdams, 45.

Barbie was one of the films celebrated that evening. While Robbie’s co-star Gosling, 43, was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor, Gerwig, 40, was honored with the global icon and creator award.
