Mark Billingham News
Sir Tony Robinson is to be credited with inspiring Mark Billingham to start writing.Readers of Weekend Magazine may have read our interview with the author of Maid Marian, but Mark also has a connection to the show. He performed as Gary the guard while working as a gig actor.
“By the fourth series Tony asked me to get involved in the writing of it, and when that show finished, I’d just become a writer by default,” the man claims.
“I stumbled into being a writer. He smiles and says, “We’ll have to interview the entire Maid Marian cast. It was still quite a large step from there to writing a novel. When Maid Marian was broadcast in America, it aired at around midnight back-to-back with Blackadder.
They may not have even been aware that the programme was intended to be for children. That’s another aspect of Tony’s writing genius. I never had a better job; it was such a great show. On July 29, Mark will participate in a crime fiction special in Armagh as a part of the John Hewitt International Summer School with other writers (and group members; more on that later).
We’d want to talk about crime today, specifically his DI Tom Thorne series, of which The Murder Book, the 18th book, has recently been published. However, Mark is taking a vacation from Thorne “for a couple of years” but is adamant that the DI is still alive.
The conclusion of that [most recent] book felt like a suitable place to take a brief break. I’ve written a number of independent works, and I always liked taking a year apart to work on something different before returning to Thorne feeling revitalised.
“That’s always the theory: if you want to keep the series interesting, you have to do something. That same series can’t just be written over and over again. The dread of writing one or two too many books in a series is another. Mark says, “We all who write series get together in the back of book festivals and talk about that.”
You just never know. It’s like those X Factor contestants who think they can sing. You believe that you are still producing quality work, and you undoubtedly make an effort to do so, but we all know that some series have already reached their expiration date. You don’t want yours to fall into that category. I believe the best authors, including Michael Connelly, Ian Rankin, and Val McDermid, learn how to keep their work fresh by moving on to other projects.
It’s not just printing the same book, either. It’s a well-known fact that fans of a series prefer a book that is similar to the previous one but slightly different. That might be hazardous.
