News Markwayne Mullin

Markwayne Mullin, a Republican senator from Oklahoma, declared, “I don’t want reality,” when questioning a witness about child care and racial education. The comment made the audience in the auditorium laugh.

Mullin claimed he “got it wrong” and went on to lecture his witness again about whether or not a book meant to teach children about racism belongs in early education. Before being elected to the Senate last year, Mullin was a member of the US House of Representatives and a former cage fighter. He also owns a plumbing company.

His combative behavior has already drawn criticism. For example, in a heated argument in March, he advised the Teamsters leader to “shut the fuck up.” Mullin commented on the reality and its application Wednesday during a hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Vermont’s Bernie Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist who chairs the panel, vehemently disagrees with Mullin’s philosophy. “Solving the Child Care Crisis: Meeting the Needs of Working Families and Child Care Workers” was the topic of discussion.

The president of the Washington, DC, Independent Women’s Forum and the New Mexico secretary of early care and childhood were two of the five witnesses. When it was Mullin’s turn to ask a question, she pulled out the Our Skin book and declared, “I’m going to read exactly what this book says. I think you will find it fascinating.

“A long time ago, long before you were born, some white people invented the concept of race. They classify people by skin color and claim that white people are superior, wiser, and more beautiful than others.

When Sanders asked Mullin if he disagreed with the book, Mullin replied: “One hundred percent. Let’s tell others that Jesus loves them. …and showing how much Jesus adores little children. “Red and yellow, black and white,” the text reads. All of them are precious in our eyes. Mullin was referring to C Herbert Woolston’s hymn, Jesus Loves Little Children.

The right has taken over Jessica Ralli and Megan Madison’s Our Skin: The First Conversation on Race in the current debate about learning about race.

Mullin added: “I’m going to ask everyone on the panel,” identifying himself as a “Cherokee Indian” and saying: “I guess we’ve encountered a bit of racism in my life. What is more effective to teach?
