The son of a Wellington woman who was murdered decades ago by a notorious killer clown speaks for the first time since accepting a plea deal that resulted in the recent conviction of his mother’s killer.
Joe Ahrens told WPTV that after 33 years of suffering, he is finally at peace, despite wanting the case to go to trial. The mystery-filled story has dominated the news for more than three decades.
Will we ever find out who was the one-armed clown who fatally shot Marlene Warren at the front door of her Wellington home in 1990? Finally, Ahrens claimed that he now had the solution and the conviction that he had been looking for.
His mother’s killer was sentenced to 12 years in prison on April 25. Sheila Keen Warren has agreed to a plea deal for the murder of Marlene Warren, the wife of her boyfriend Michael Warren.
Ahrens is aware that the plea agreement deprived him of the opportunity to receive a harsher sentence, perhaps even life in prison, if the matter had gone to trial.
“I’m much better now. I’m relieved to have lost 1,000 pounds,” Ahrens added. “Now I have the energy that I should have had a long time ago.”
He remembers having breakfast with his mother on the day of the shooting 33 years ago.

We saw paint, flowers and balloons, but the doorbell didn’t ring, Ahrens added.
His mother got up from the table.
She remembered thinking, “Oh, how beautiful, flowers and balloons,” as she was opening the door, but suddenly there was a knock. “My whole universe changed. The worst day of my life was that.
He claimed that he could not see the wearer of the clown suit.
“Can’t say,” he replied. “Can you see someone dressed as a clown? All bases are covered.
He just remembered the killer walking back to the getaway car, uncharacteristically calm.
He called 911 while grabbing the car keys.
“I was driving wild, crazy, running red lights,” Ahrens admitted. But we didn’t manage to catch them.
But he claimed that both he and investigators suspected Sheila Keen Warren from the start.
Besides, she believed that her stepfather slept with her.
“He wasn’t going to come home, that said it all,” Ahrens said.
He intended to tell the jury, if the case goes to trial, that he saw Sheila Keen-Warren kissing Michael Warren at a house party while his mother was present.
