“I thought, this is confusing because emotionally (his manager) Chris’s mom passed away. She was like a mother to me. There were so many different things that felt like they were falling apart in my world,” he continues. “But at the end of the day, to my core, which is my wife, my kids, my family, it was going well.”

“My wife, she’s such an amazing person. She keeps me sane. She keeps my ego in check. My two kids, they’re two of the best things I’ve ever seen or witnessed in my life,” he says.

“There are some fake people, there are some real people,” he says. “All these things started to develop in my 20s. As I got older, I started focusing more on what kind of person I wanted to be instead of what kind of artist I wanted to be.”

Now he’s happy where he is – and he details that feeling in a song on the album called “Tired of Hollywood.”

“I’m speaking my truth about how I feel like I’ve been treated as an artist and the things I’ve done throughout my career. I’ve been called more underrated than successful,” he explains. “I’m just tired of everything. Now, as a man, I don’t even need that. I’m happy where I am, I’m financially stable, I have a great family and I don’t need That song really says a lot to me as a person and as an artist.”

When he’s not working, Houston – who says fatherhood has opened his eyes to “a different tone of life” – looks forward to “little moments” with his family.

Marques Houston says being a dad is one of his ‘greatest achievements’: ‘Family comes first’

“In this day and age with the news and this and that and social media, it’s good to just be positive. Sometimes you just have to lock yourself in the house and be with your family, friends and loved ones,” he says, adding that his son “laughs best in the world”.

Being a father has taught Houston “patience,” which he says he had “zero” growing up.

“Everyone who knows me will tell you that Marques has no patience,” says the “Gole” singer. “But I didn’t know I had patience until I became a husband and a father, because that’s one thing you have to have is patience, especially with kids, because they’re going to get on their nerves.”

With the album finally out in the world, Houston hopes people can feel the passion that went into its creation. Looking back at his discography, it’s his favorite project so far — and he shares the biggest lesson he’s learned along the way.

“You should be a light, a beam of light in this negative world,” he says.
