MARS has announced it’s bringing back the iconic chocolate bar that was discontinued 34 years ago – but you’ll have to be quick to grab it.

The bar was rebranded in 1990 and lost its iconic name, but will return to supermarket shelves for a limited time this year.

Mars has confirmed the return of the Marathon bar, which has not been a regular feature in UK stores for more than three decades.

Marathon bars became Snickers when it was rebranded, which was already a common name for the famous chocolate bar in the US.

Snickers was first launched there in 1930, and the candy was named after a horse owned by the Mars family.

The bar, which consists of nougat, caramel and peanuts wrapped in milk chocolate, arrived in the UK in 1968 but was given a different name.

The chocolate treat was known here as the Marathon bar for 22 years, but in 1990 Mars decided it was time to bring the UK in line with the rest of the global brand.

At the time there was also a similar but unrelated product in the US called the Marathon, which was more like the British Curly Wurly.

Chocolate fans reached out to X after the news.

One said: “I enjoyed the Marathon bar but never bought a Snickers (same bar but with a stupid name).”

Another added: “That [Snickers] is too close to the word panties to ever sound delicious. Explore the UK market, Mars.”

While a third wrote: “OMG has always been and always will be a marathon.”

Those who feel the same way are in luck because they will be able to get their hands on the old Marathon bars again.

Over the next few months Snickers bars sold in Morrisons will return to their retro packaging.

The limited edition covers will be available exclusively in Morrisons until December, meaning you’ll only have a few months to enjoy the blast from the past.

Mars Senior Brand Manager, Steve Waters, said: “We are excited to be bringing back the Marathon bar brand for a limited time.

“It’s a great way to celebrate over 90 years of making chocolate on Mars in the UK.

“We hope Snickers fans who remember the time when it was called Marathon will enjoy buying it in store.”

But this is not the first time that the confectionary, which also owns the famous names M&M’s, Galaxy, Twix and Maltesers, revives the brand.

In 2008, Mars launched a three-month trial period where it brought back the legendary Marathon name.

In 2019 and 2020, the Marathon bar also briefly returned in a similar fashion to this year’s return.

The return five years ago caused a lot of excitement among customers at the time.

Morrisons was even forced to apply the limit after one customer bought 404 tiles.

Discontinued iconic chocolates

Cadbury’s Dream Chocolate bar: The popular bar was discontinued in 2002 but relaunched in 2019 under the new name ‘Cadbury White’.

Mars Delight Bar: Although it proved to be a perennial favorite among candy lovers during its four-year stay in stores starting in 2004, it was pulled from store shelves by 2008. Fans are still waiting for the treat’s return.

Nestlé’s Caramac Bar: The unique bar has been in stores for more than six decades, but was discontinued last year due to a steady decline in sales. It was later revived for a limited time in July this year.

Milky Way Crispy Rolls: They were pulled from shelves in 2022, and fans were so distraught by the news that a petition to bring them back has been launched, which currently has more than 8,500 signatures.

White Maltesers: The white chocolate version of the popular snack had a strong 11-year run, but declining sales doomed them to discontinuation in 2014.

Cadbury’s Spira: This chocolate was once considered by fans to be the “best” bar ever, but production ceased in 2005 despite its obvious popularity. But people are campaigning for his return, and he even has a Facebook page dedicated to it with more than 35,000 followers.
