Martha Stewart has been teaching for decades — through cookbooks, on TV, in magazines bearing her name. Now he’s teaching the world about the events of his life in a new Netflix documentary Marta.
“I just hope that everyone gets some life lessons from the movie and understands what’s going on,” Stewart tells PEOPLE.
No difficult topic is excluded. Stewart, 83, reveals that both she and her ex-husband, publisher Andy Stewart, had affairs during their marriage. The couple were married from 1961 to 1990 and share a daughter, Alexis, born in 1965.
Early in the film, Martha recalls kissing a “very handsome guy” in Florence’s Duomo on her European honeymoon while Andy was at their hotel.

“He didn’t know I was married,” she says of the stranger. “I was that vagrant of a girl hanging in the cathedral on the eve of Easter. He was emotional. I was emotional. That’s just because it was an emotional place. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced.”

Martha goes on to say that she once had a “very brief affair” with a “very attractive Irishman” while working as a stockbroker in the late 60s.
“It’s nothing,” she says. “I would never end my marriage for that.”
Andy told producers he “didn’t go astray” until she did.
“He wasn’t happy at home,” Martha says in the film. “I don’t know how many different girlfriends he had during that time, but I think there were quite a few.”
“Young women, take my advice, if you’re married and your husband starts cheating on you, he’s one with…” she adds in a clip previously seen in the Doctor’s trailer. “Get out of that marriage.”

Later in the film, Martha’s friend Kathy Tatlock recalls rumors that Andy had “some sort of relationship with a girl who did flower arrangements” at Turkey Hill Farm (the couple’s home in Westport, Conn.).
Martha says her employee needed a place to stay, so she invited her to move into a barn apartment on their property.
“When I was traveling, Andy started with her,” she says. “It was like I made a snack for Andy.”
Martha says she confronted them about the affair. “I kicked her out right away,” she says. “You know, ‘What the hell are you doing?'”
“Andy betrayed me, on our property,” she continues. “It’s not nice.”
When Martha wasn’t ready to talk on camera, she sent director RJ Cutler personal letters that revealed her inner thoughts. “I’m terribly jealous of your other wives,” she wrote to Andy during this period.

They divorced after 29 years.
“He’s the one who wanted a divorce, not me,” says Martha. “He rejected me. I was 40 years old. I was beautiful. You know, I was an eager woman. But he treated me like a castaway. He treated me very badly. And in turn, I guess I treated him badly.”
