Martin Luther King’s Daughter Says Her Mom ‘Wasn’t a Prop’ After Jonathan Majors Called Meagan Good His ‘Coretta’

“My mom was a force,” said the youngest child of the late civil rights activist

Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice King, wants her mother’s legacy to be properly remembered.

On Tuesday, the youngest child of the late civil rights leaders shared tweet honoring her late mother, Coretta Scott King.

“My mother was not a prop,” the 60-year-old began. “She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in getting him to speak out against the Vietnam War. Please understand…my mom was a force.”

While Bernice did not explain what prompted her social media message, it came after ABC News aired a taped interview with Jonathan Majors on Monday in which the former Marvel star referred to his current girlfriend, Meagan Good, as “Coretta.”

“She’s an angel,” Majors, 34, told ABC News Live reporter Linsey Davis. “She held me like Coretta [Scott King]. I am so blessed to have her,” he said. “The connection is still fresh, but you know, I think I found it.”

Last month, Belief III the actor was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.

During the highly publicized trial, an audio recording was played of Majors asking Jabbari to act more like Coretta or Michelle Obama. Good, 42, appeared by his side during several of his court appearances.

PEOPLE reached out to Bernice for comment, but did not immediately respond.

Her X (formerly known as Twitter) message included a portrait of her mother and linked to an article from 2017. HuffPostwebsite she wrote about Coretta a few years ago.

The piece was titled “The Woman Who Destined to Be King”.

“Before my mother became king, she was a Scott of Marion, Alabama, the daughter of hardy, righteous parents, Obadiah and Bernice… Coretta Scott was born to a woman who supported [her] community”, the article began.

As the post continued, Bernice praised her mother for her “success,” “strength” and other admirable qualities she had mastered before meeting King.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In 2022, Bernice asked that the nation remember her mother as well.

“As you honor my father today, please remember and honor my mother as well,” she said. wrote on X.

“She was the architect of the Royal Legacy and the founder @TheKingCenterwhich she founded two months after dad was killed,” Bernice continued. “Without #CorettaScottKing, there would be no #MLKDay.”
