Martín Pradenas Wikipedia, Wiki, eDad, Familia, Biografia – This Friday, the Chilean judiciary sentenced 31-year-old Martín Pradenas to 17 years in prison for seven sexual offenses committed against six victims between 2010 and 2019. This case, which has been ongoing for three year, is a symbol of the feminist struggle of the South American nation. It all started in 2019 when Antonia Barra, then 21 years old, was accused of being raped. Three weeks after the attack, the young victim took her own life, inspiring thousands of other women to take to the streets to seek revenge. Barra’s family and the prosecution demanded a sentence of 40 years in prison for the “sexual predator”.

The guy who sexually assaulted Antonia Barra, the 21-year-old whose suicide left Chile speechless, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.
In a case that rocked Chile, Martn Pradenas, the man accused of raping Antonia Barr, a 21-year-old woman who committed suicide after the incident, was given a 17-year prison sentence by the Chilean judiciary.
South of Santiago, in Temuco, the Oral Criminal Court found Pradenas guilty of this and six additional sexual offenses against victims over the age of 14 and one younger.
The cities of Temuco and Pucón in the south of Chile are the sites of crimes committed between 2010 and 2019.
Barra’s family and other victims said they were not happy with the sentence even though the defendant was found guilty; the prosecution requested that Pradenas receive a 40-year sentence.
Alejandro Barra, Antonia’s father, told local media after learning of the court’s decision: “It’s not a sentence that satisfies us, it’s just a medicine that doesn’t completely soothe us.”
“No sentence, neither 40 nor 100 years given to the accused or the convicted person, will calm the immense pain of losing our beautiful daughter,” the man continued.
The prosecution asked Martno Pradenas for 40 years in prison.
Two cases, two judgments
Two tests were conducted at Pradenas. The first one ended in August 2022 when he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. However, the verdict was overturned by the Chilean Supreme Court after it was argued that the sentencing court was not impartial.
Initially, the defendant was placed under house arrest, but he was not detained as a preventive measure by the judge who confirmed the rape of Antonia Barr.
In addition, he downplayed the evidence offered during the trial, which was broadcast live to an audience of more than a million people, and guaranteed that the allegations of two additional victims were proven false.
The judiciary in Chile caused street protests, barricades and banging of pots with shouts of the rousing feminist anthem “Silavnik si ti!” and the cry “Justice for Antonija”.
In response to the request of the prosecutor, the Court of Appeal in Temuco studied the case and annulled the house arrest in favor of preventive imprisonment.
The court declared Pradenas, then 28, “dangerous to society,” according to Chilean newspaper La Tercera.
The same charges were considered in a second trial that ended on Friday and lasted 37 days.
The solution to the case was welcomed by the Chilean Minister for Women and Gender Equality, Antonio Orellana.
He stated that it is crucial that the victims get justice and that the crimes they survived be authenticated.
“We want to insist that the gender perspective in the judiciary is not something that obscures impartiality, but that in cases of sexual violence like this it is shown that the culprit is the aggressor, and not the victim who must prove that he is innocent, that he did not deserve the attack that got,” Orellana continued.
What happened to Antonia Barra?
In the early morning hours of September 18, 2019, Antonia Barra woke up in a cabin (a type of vacation rental) in Pucón, Chile. Her body was on top of Pradenas’s. She yelled at him to get away from her before getting dressed and walking out.
With her friend and lover, Barra traveled to that city and visited a night club. The harassment of Pradenas would begin there and would be caught on camera.
The young woman’s story is revealed by the text and audio communications she sent to several friends via WhatsApp, which were published by the prosecutor’s office.
Barra said Pradenas sexually assaulted her, but refrained from reporting it because she was worried about her parents’ reaction. Because of this, she remained silent until October 12, 2019. On that day, she informed her ex-boyfriend, Rodrigo Canari, about the attack by phone. His sexuality was tortured.
