Martin Scorsese's 3 Daughters: All About Cathy, Domenica and Francesca

Martin Scorsese finds inspiration in his children.

The Oscar-winning director, whose career spans five decades and more than 20 films, has three daughters: Cathy, Domenica and Francesca. His girls were exposed to the film industry from a young age, and his youngest daughter even inspired him to produce an Oscar-winning film Hugowhich is based on one of her favorite childhood books: Invention of Hugo Cabret.

“Being a father at a later age is different than when I had my other two daughters in my 20s and 30s. If you’re in your 60s and you’re with a child every day, you’re dealing with a child’s mind, so it opens up that childishness in to you,” he said Parade magazine. “You start playing and enter a child’s fantasy, then you invent even crazier stories and suddenly we’re shooting this movie! She’s a lifesaver!”

Scorsese – who welcomed each daughter with a different woman – serves as a guiding light to his children, who all have careers in the film and television industries. Despite the 33-year age difference between his eldest and youngest daughter, the siblings are on good terms and have been seen together on red carpets supporting their father.

“I like being around them. I learned a lot from that,” Scorsese said GQ.

So who are Martin Scorsese’s daughters? Read on to learn more about Cathy, Domenica and Francesca.

Cathy Scorsese, 58

The legendary film producer and his first wife, Laraine Marie Brennan, welcomed their daughter Cathy on December 7, 1965. The college sweethearts decided to honor Scorsese’s mother Catherine by naming their baby girl after her.

Cathy was exposed to the film industry from a young age, as Scorsese brought her to a screening of his film at the New York Film Festival, Evil streetswhen she was 8 years old. After the screening, when her father asked her what she thought of the film, she asked him how they made the blood in the film look so real. Her curiosity for details turned into a decades-long career as a prop designer.

In her mid-20s, she apprenticed with prop designer Jim Mazzola and trained in the use of theatrical firearms to become a member of New York’s IATSE Local 52, a union of motion picture studio mechanics. Her career includes working on sets such as The Soprano family, casino, Dead and Boardwalk Empire.

She also tried her hand at acting, recording a cameo as Dolores The king of comedy (1982) and plays Piscano’s daughter in casino (1995).

Domenica Cameron-Scorsese, 48

After Scorsese and Brennan divorced, the Killers of the Flower Moon the producer married journalist Julia Cameron. Within a year of their marriage, on September 6, 1976, they had their daughter Domenica.

Their daughter was raised in a creative environment, something Cameron praised in her 2013 book. The Artist’s Way for Parents: Raising Creative Children.

Domenica’s artistic upbringing paved the way for a career in show business. She studied filmmaking at Wesleyan University and Trinity College, Dublin, where she wrote and directed her first play. She produced her first short film, Little God2001, which won the Torchlight Short Film Award. After hitting a snag with one of her passion projects in 2007, she became the director of the 2016 feature film. Almost Paris.

“If there’s one piece of advice I have for aspiring filmmakers, it’s this: Make something. The act of making something is more important than all the reasons put together not to make something. That’s a lesson I learned the hard way,” she said IndieWire.

He also has credits for his work in front of the camera including appearances in films such as Cape Fear (1991), The Age of Innocence (1993) and Stalker (2019) and landed the lead role of Broadway bride Tina in the interactive comedy, Tony and Tina’s wedding (2000).

As for her personal life, Domenica married her husband Tony Frenzel in a ceremony in Chicago in November 2011.

Francesca Scorsese, 24

Scorsese and his fifth and current wife, Helen Morris, welcomed their daughter, Francesca, on November 16, 1999, about four months after they said, “I do.”

As a child, Francesca was immersed in filmmaking, which served as inspiration for her career.

“I mean, I practically grew up on movie sets. It was literally my life. And I thought life was actually like pretending all the time,” she said The Hollywood Reporter. “I have so many memories – I mean, my dad put me on a prop plane from Aviatorand I thought I was in a real plane, and then the turbulence started, and now I’m terrified of planes — I can’t fly! That was me when I was 3 years old. As I got older, I thought, ‘I want to do this.’ ”

She graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, which is also her father’s alma mater, and premiered her directorial debut A fish out of water in June 2023. The 25-minute drama, which follows a struggling young mom who has a chance to reconnect with her estranged family after her now-sober father shares the news of her mother’s failing health, was Francesca’s NYU thesis.

She is also comfortable in front of the lens, as she played Britney Orton in HBO We are what we are and appeared in several of her father’s projects, including Dead, Aviator and Boardwalk Empire.

“He’s the best teacher, guide, overall mentor — and also, he’s literally my best friend. I tell him everything,” she said of her father.

When the father-daughter duo isn’t working, they can be seen hanging out together and making viral videos on TikTok. Scorsese first appeared on his TikTok in April 2021 and has since made several cameos, including being questioned by Francesca about modern slang in October 2023.

The father-daughter duo’s last collaboration was on a 2024 Super Bowl ad for Squarespace. Francesca was the creative director behind the scenes and captured Scorsese’s directorial process from start to finish.
