Martin Short Is 'Wondering' If Even His Character Will 'Survive' on Only Murders in the Building (Exclusive)

No one is safe in Arconia – or, indeed, anywhere near it Just the murders in the building trio — and Martin Short knows it.

Short, who stars in and executive produces the hit Hulu series alongside Steve Martin and Selena Gomez, tells PEOPLE that even his character, Oliver Putnam, could “absolutely” end up as the show’s latest victim, with a new murder shocking the gang. every season.

“Listen, I’m wondering if I’m going to survive,” he says during an interview at Harrah’s Resort SoCal, hours after being sworn in as the new mayor of Funner, California on May 13.

While Short, 74, admits he “can’t reveal anything about Season 4,” he teases, “It’s a pretty good season. I thought, ‘How’s your best season 3? Adding Meryl [Streep]?’ But this year we have Eugene [Levy] and Zach [Galifianakis] and Eve [Longoria]. Molly [Shannon] and Kumail [Nanjiani]which is amazing.”

Jane Lynch is also returning — and tells PEOPLE she’ll be in “some flashbacks and then some ghostly appearances” — and Short praises her colleague and his predecessor as mayor of Funner, Calif., as “phenomenal.”

“I love Jane,” he says.

Although there is already an impressive list of upcoming stars Just the murders in the building debut next season, and an even longer list of stars who have previously joined, there are still some people Short has his eye on for the future.

“Well, I wouldn’t be upset if [Robert] DeNiro said he wanted to do it,” quips. “If Leo [DiCaprio] wants to join, that’s fine. There are a lot of fantastic people out there.”

Still, he knows “some people have busy schedules,” so he won’t always be able to get an A-lister like Meryl Streep to call him and ask to join — which happened before Season 3.

“The script is so good, and the direction, and the performance of the show is so good that it makes people go, ‘Oh, I want to be in that,'” he says. “The story with Meryl is that she called me and said, ‘I want to be in it.’

“At the end she said, ‘Don’t feel trapped by this phone call.’ I said, ‘I’m fine, Meryl,'” Short recalls.

“It’s a very, very, very loose, fun set. I think everyone has the same review – that working on the show is really fun and loose, and that’s kind of Steve’s philosophy, the way he’s always worked, as well as Selena.” says Short. “So everyone works in joy and gladness, because we are happy people.”
