Martin Short Revives Iconic Jiminy Glick Character for Hilarious Interviews with Sean Hayes and Bill Hader

Jiminy Glick still knows how to conduct an interview to comic effect.

Martin Short reprized an unusual character while guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, interviewing guests like Sean Hayes and Bill Hader. While neither actor could keep a straight face during their conversations, Short, 74, managed it, but continued to condense.

During the conversation with Hayes, Short — in character — joked that the 54-year-old actor looked “unrecognizable” because of plastic surgery (which he never had), offered Hayes donuts, which Short sneezed at (“Stupid COVID!” he added), expressed is indifference to Hayes’ breakthrough show Will & Grace and attacked the actor’s podcast SmartLess, which Hayes directs alongside Jason Bateman and Will Arnett.

“You work SmartLess,” Short said, and Hayes replied, “Yeah, it’s a podcast.”

“It is podcast,” Short repeated, laughing, and Hayes insisted, “Your should have done a podcast.”

“Oh, I don’t know. I never was broken,” Short dead.

Reflecting on Hayes’ 2023 Tony Award win for Best Actor in a Play for his portrayal of Oscar Levant in Good night, Oscar: “You won a Tony… in a very mild year, I bet.” And to celebrate the actor’s birthday on June 26, Short brought out a birthday cake, cutting off a small slice for Hayes and keeping the rest for himself.

During his conversation with Hader, 46, Short — again as Glick — feigned disappointment at not getting the “A-lister.” “I was hoping for an A-lister, but I’m thrilled to have you, Bill…Hader,” he said.

“You rushed here — you stayed at Diddy’s pool house,” Short joked, making Hader laugh.

“I’m not at Diddy’s pool house. No more. Not ever. Not everHader emphasized.

Elsewhere in the interview, Short asked Hader who he was Saturday night live cast member for eight seasons from 2005 to 2013, which SNL boss Lorne Michaels smells.

“I think it would be like a combination of chicken piccata and silver dollars,” Short mused before complimenting the actor, “It’s a nice outfit – if you’re a thief.”

Although Hader won two Emmy Awards for his work on HBO’s dark comedy Barry — both for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2018 and 2019 — Short was less than impressed with Hader and the show’s four-season run from 2018 to 2023.

“What are you doing next?” Shorty asked. “Should I guess? No-uh [nothing].”
