When KMET (now KTWV, 94.7 FM) began to gain popularity in the 1970s, “The Burner” Mary Turner was an early pioneer of progressive rock and album radio. If you were a listener at the time, you might remember her. In many ways, she embodied what KMET was to her listeners: knowledgeable, passionate and humane, on the KMET airwaves from 1972 to 1982.
Turner died on May 9. Ace Young, Turner’s co-worker at KMET, shared the news and the recognition on social media.
Turner gave an interview to Don Barrett of LARadio.Com a few years ago in which he discussed his career and the early years of prog rock radio. Who cares if you play what you want or say what you want? FM was considered absurd at the time, especially by Top 40 fans. They were the stars, while we were the hippies.
How did your career suffer as a result of being a woman in what was a predominantly male field at the time? “I think being a woman helped more than anything else,” Turner told Barrett. I was in the right place at the right time because it was the right time.
Todd admitted, “I let my job consume me for almost 30 years.” I swore to my family that I would not let work overwhelm me because I had seen so many friends and family do it before it was too late. I can’t remember the last time I slept before 5 or 6 in the morning.
As the network’s top political commentator, Todd will continue to work for NBC in his new role. NBC says he will focus on long-term coverage, continuing to air “Chuck Toddcast” and “Meet the Press Reports.”
The email said Todd “will maintain his role as the top political voice at NBC News, both on the ground and at major events.”
He did brief interviews and music news segments for KMET which later became nationally syndicated Off the Record specials; these shows had an audience of around 25 million and are still appreciated today. For her regular late-night radio shift, she was one of the first people to interview a teenage Bruce Springsteen.
He stayed with Off the Record after leaving KMET, did a daytime show for Armed Forces Radio, worked briefly for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and even participated in “Music in the Air,” an entertainment program used on the now-defunct TWA Airlines. In 1993, he briefly returned to the local airwaves at KLSX (now KNX-FM, 97.1).
