Rant screen: black phone It’s emotional, it’s scary, it’s a lot of things. We’ll start with Madeleine, then Mason, how do you feel when the script comes to you and you’ve seen everything the movie is about?
Madeleine McGraw: I was surprised. When I read it, I thought, “Anyway, I have to play Gwen and be in this movie.” Because characters like Gwen, and scripts like Black Phone, they don’t appear often, so I was amazed as soon as I read the script.
Mason Thames: The first time I read this book with Mom and Dad, I remembered a scene – I don’t know if I could say anything about it once it was released – but someone interrupted, I miss myself was shocked and I was very sad because I love this character so much. As Madeleine said, things like this don’t happen all the time, so I’m glad I got the chance to do so.
Now, one of the best things about a movie like this is when you put love into the characters, and in this movie the sibling relationship between the two of you really helps to elevate that. there . How did the two of you feel when building a relationship before filming?
Mason Thames: Well, unfortunately, we’re filming during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, so we don’t hang out much together. But whenever possible, between shoots or after shoots and the like, we would have dinner or something. But we get along very well.
Madeleine McGraw: I love working with Mason because in between shots we hang out and do a lot of things. So I think we get along really well, which is great because that actually shows up in the movie.
Yes, it is definitely on the screen. Mason, you bear the brunt of the physical aspects of this movie. How did you feel filming all these tense moments in your basement?
Mason Thames: Honestly, I think the worst part is wearing fake sweats. Everything else is fun, but this fake sweat, I know it’s the most random thing, but it’s like the greasy, most disgusting thing ever, and it’s disgusting. But otherwise everything is great. Sometimes it’s a physical thing, but I do it for fun. I had to wear a harness to lift me up, which was fun.
What was your first reaction when you saw the real Grabber mask on set?
Madeleine McGraw: For me, I didn’t see it on set and I don’t think I’ll miss it. [Chuckles] But I watched it at the premiere and I was like, “Oh my god, this is scary!” He showed up behind us and everything was scary.
Mason Thames: Yeah, it’s scary to see that in person. Especially Ethan in the back, when he does, the look in his eyes – well, it gives me chills.
Madeleine McGraw: But, the mask is really a work of art.
Yeah, I remember it was the first picture for the movie and I said, “Okay, I’m in.” Mason, since you mentioned Ethan, he’s known for being a very nice guy, and here black phone, He’s just a horrible guy. How did you feel when you saw those two sides of him on set?
Mason Thames: Yeah, I mean, Ethan’s transition to The Grabber was pretty crazy. He was the best person ever, and when he put the mask on, something happened inside of him. Like the inner grasper. I don’t even want to talk about it without fear, but he’s the best actor ever, and just seeing him do it, it’s just so unrealistic.
With so many layers and dynamics in each of your characters, what was the biggest creative challenge for you guys to get into Finny and Gwen?
Madeleine McGraw: For me, I think the biggest challenge is finding Gwen’s feelings of abandonment again because I have a loving and supportive family and Gwen comes from a very broken family, with an alcoholic father. So even though Gwen swears like a sailor and is tough, I feel like she’s using that side of her to hide her more vulnerable side, so that’s the challenge. biggest.
Mason Thames: Well, I would definitely say that because I have such a wonderful family, it’s hard to imagine what Finney is going through, I can’t imagine. So I was watching an old movie from around 1950, I think it’s called The Four Hundred Blows, it’s a French movie about childhood trauma, so that really helped me find a role. Finney, then it was fun and I had a lot of freedom.
Scott Derrickson is a veteran of the horror genre, were any of you a fan of his work before this movie?
Madeleine McGraw: Oh yeah, Doctor Strange of course. But I’m not allowed to watch a lot of horror movies. [Chuckles] I don’t know, I kept begging my mom to show me Sinister, but she said, “Absolutely not.” Now she even shook her head. [Laughs]
Mason Thames: Yes, the sinister type scares me a lot. I watched that movie with my brother, I think it was Halloween 2018 or the 17th. I had a group of friends who said, “Do you want to see a horror movie?”
Madeleine McGraw: Did you watch Sinister on Halloween?
Mason Thames: Yeah, it was about two in the morning and he turned it on the TV. I don’t think we got any sleep, that was amazing. [Laughs]

Mason Thames: It’s unbelievable.
Madeleine McGraw: Great. Without words, it’s unbelievable.
During filming, did you feel it had potential for a wider audience?
Madeleine McGraw: Yes, of course. But when it came out, I was a bit shocked.
Mason Thames: Yeah, it all happened so fast, it felt like I was filming a few months ago. Oddly enough, it’s currently out on Blu-ray and my friends say they’ve watched it more than 20 times.
Madeleine McGraw: Yeah, my friends sent me pictures of the scene they watched and they said, “I know who it is!” [Laughs]
So Scott scoffed at the idea of a possibility black phone The sequel, what are your thoughts on continuing the story?
Madeleine McGraw: If there is, I will, I will.
Mason Thames: Yeah, it’s going to be fun.
Where would you like to see your character go in a potential sequel?
Mason Thames: I don’t know, that’s a really good question.
Madeleine McGraw: Yeah, I don’t know. I want to see them grow as characters, siblings and people.
I would also like to see the next developments in that regard, especially the father’s redemption at the end of the movie, or maybe not the redemption, I don’t know, it could be completely different in the sequel. according to. Madeleine McGraw: Well, I think, when I was filming this movie, I was 8 years old, so I was really small. But I know I’m like a scary guy on the inside, but I feel like somehow you still see the light inside of me, I don’t know.
