Matthew Gray Gubler will finally debut on Criminal Minds: Evolution.
According to TVLine , schedules have finally aligned and Gubler, 44, will join the cast — but don’t expect to see too much of him on the Paramount+ series. He will only appear in one episode of Season 18. This is also confirmed by the outlet Criminal minds finished filming season 18 earlier this week.
PEOPLE has reached out to Paramount+ for comment.
Gubler, who plays Spencer Reid, is Criminal minds a fan favorite of the franchise who has been notably absent from the series’ sequel since its debut in November 2022. The story established that Reid and Special Agent Matt Simmons (played by Daniel Henney, another notably missing cast member) were away on assignment.

“It’s a bit of a mystery what Reid and Simmons are up to,” showrunner Erica Messer told TVLine ahead of time Evolutionpremiere. “But they are certainly not forgotten. dr. Reid and I believe Matt Simmons’ desks are still there, still have stuff on them. [Spencer and Matt] they didn’t disappear disappeared.”
After closing in 2020. Criminal minds revived by Paramount+ with Joe Mantegna, AJ Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster returning as their characters.
Gubler played Reid from 2005 to 2020 and appeared in more than 300 episodes of the hit series. On February 19, 2020, he shared a heartfelt greeting on Instagram that included a photo of his favorite props.

“I have carried these 3 props with me almost every day for the past 15 years. After tonight I will only carry them in my heart where I will forever cherish the memories of the best crew, best cast and best fans (fans/friends) a fictional crime fighter could ever have,” he wrote in the caption.
Gubler teased his interest in returning to the series as early as September 2023.
“I would be honored. I would absolutely love to,” he said of appearing on Criminal Minds: Evolution during an interview in Ireland Show at six o’clockaccording to Screen Rant. “They made a newer spinoff of the series, but it was filmed at a time when I was filming something else. But I can’t wait — I hope it works out soon.”
