Matthew McConaughey Claims to Be the Tuna Salad ‘Master’ — Here’s What His Wife Camila Really Thinks (Exclusive)

Matthew McConaughey may claim to be the “master producer of tuna salad,” but Camila Alves McConaughey is setting the record straight.

The model, who partners with Crock-Pot, revealed to PEOPLE what she thinks about A true detective the star’s internet creation.

“I’m a tuna salad master,” McConaughey began, before describing to Tom Segura and Bert Kreischer “a long list of all kinds of things” that go into making “poor tuna.” “It starts with a stock, you get good tuna,” he began, explaining that he adds lemon, vinegar and mayo mixed with wasabi to make the base. The list of toppings is long and extensive, from chopped red onion, finely chopped dill, pickles, gherkins, crispy jalapeño slices, apple, agave, corn and frozen peas.

Matthew went on to explain that it had to sit overnight for the final touch. “As you know, as every peasant knows, is it better then? Or it’s better to cover it after you put it in the fridge the next day, it’s all congealed, all the flavors are real, now you’re sitting there, I guessed it.”

The internet was just as stunned as Segura and Kreischer as clips of people recreating Dazed and confused the actor’s recipe, but his wife, with whom he had been for 12 years, supported her husband.

Before he was even asked about the controversial tuna salad, the Women of Today founder told PEOPLE that Matthew makes an “excellent” tuna salad.

“He’s a tuna salad master. Anyone who tries to replicate doesn’t come close,” Camila continued, wary of sharing all the tricks of Matthew’s trade. “But it’s not just a traditional tuna salad. He puts all kinds of things in there. I don’t want to give away his secrets because I don’t know what he shared.”

But when she heard that he had spilled the beans (peas to be exact) on the recipe, Camila became even more concerned with the dish.

While grilling steaks is Matthew’s “domain,” Camila detailed how the whole family gets involved in the cooking.

“Everyone in the family cooks. Even my 11-year-old, he cooks Sunday breakfast and stuff like that, he’s in charge of it,” said the co-founder of Pantalones Organic Tequile. “Everyone cooks, everyone helps clean. And when I need help outside the family, I get help too, because I feel that sometimes we need help and we have to ask for it.”

The couple has sons Levi (16) and Livingston (11) and daughter Vida (14).

Alves, who partners with Crock-Pot, explained how cooking looks a little different at her house when it comes to game days.

The family of University of Texas football fans goes to the game when it’s a home game (“We don’t miss it!” Camila said), but stays in and watches TV when it’s away.

“We’re in the house cooking and getting together and the guys are throwing football passes left and right and I’m usually in the kitchen making things,” she explained, adding that while she loves to cook, sometimes being a chef means missing out on the fun. “When everyone is watching the game, sitting, drinking, passing balls, inside jokes and all that, I’m in the kitchen. Then I’ll clean it up and sort things out in the kitchen.”

When she’s just cooking for fun, the mother of three needs the right tools, like the Crock-Pot MultiMeal Multicooker: “I can do two things at once and have everything ready.”
