Matthew McConaughey Says His Mom Started Rumor That Woody Harrelson Is His Brother ‘Out of Nowhere’

Matthew McConaughey knows who is behind the Woody Harrelson brother rumors.

During the performance at Access every day On Tuesday, host Kit Hoover asked the Oscar winner, 53, what his mom Kay thought about the theory that he and co-star Harrelson, 63, could be half-siblings.

“What does K-Mac have to say about this?” – the presenter asked, to which McConaughey replied: “She’s the one who started the whole thing!”

“One night we’re all sitting in Greece talking, and out of nowhere, my mom says, ‘Oh, I knew your dad, Woody…’ out of nowhere,” the actor said.

He continued, “And we all said, ‘What was the ellipsis about?’ And what happened knew eye?’ And she says, ‘I’m just saying, maybe we used to visit a similar place in West Texas once when he was on vacation.’ ”

“And we all said, ‘What? What, are you going to leave it there?’ ” he continued. “Now we have to go do some DNA tests.”

McConaughey was the first to mention his and Harrelson’s potential relationship Let’s talk on camera with Kelly Ripa in April as they teased their aptly named project Brother from another mother.

“Where I begin and where he ends and where he begins and I end has always been a blurred line, and that’s part of our relationship, isn’t it?” he told host Kelly Ripa at the time. “My kids call him Uncle Woody, his kids call me Uncle Matthew.”

McConaughey continued: “My family thinks a lot of his pictures are me, his family thinks a lot of my pictures are him,” before sharing the Greek discovery story with Ripa, 52.

According to McConaughey, the timeline also seems to match up – it’s possible that his mom “knew” Harrelson’s father at the time she was separated from husband James Donald McConaughey.

Although the two may do a DNA test sometime in the future, Dallas Buyers Club the actor told Ripa that it would be “a little harder” for him than for Harrelson.

It’s a little easier for Wood to say, ‘Come on, let’s do it,’ because what’s in it for him? He said. “It’s a little harder for me because it’s asking me to take a chance and go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re telling me my dad might not be my dad for 53 years,’ and I believe that?”

“I have a little more skin in the game,” he added.

Shortly after McConaughey’s conversation with Ripa, Harrelson discussed their potential brotherhood The Late Show with Stephen Colbert — and echoed his longtime friend’s hesitation about the DNA test.

“The thing is, we want to go to the test, but for him it’s a much bigger thing,” he said of McConaughey. “I mean, he feels like he’s losing his father. But I said, ‘No, you’re getting another father and a brother.’ ”

McConaughey and Harrelson first teamed up for a satirical film in 1999 EDtv. They have since reunited on screen for the 2008 comedy film Surfer, dude and in the first season of HBO A true detective.
