Matthew Perry Was ‘Very Nice’ at Diner Where He Was Spotted with Friend Days Before His Death: Source

Just a week before his sudden death, Matthew Perry was enjoying a night out with a friend at a popular eatery in Los Angeles.

The 54-year-old actor – who died on Saturday in an apparent drowning – was last photographed in public on October 21 at Apple Pan, which he left with a drink in hand. Perry wore dark pants and a gray T-shirt, while his dinner companion carried a tote bag.

“He was a good guy, very sweet,” a restaurant source told PEOPLE about the previous visit Friends star of The Apple Pan, which is popular with celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio.

Adds the source of Perry’s low-key demeanor: “It was a busy day, but people weren’t really looking at it.”

Following news of his death, the star’s family mourned his loss in a statement shared exclusively with PEOPLE.

“We are heartbroken at the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother,” the family said. “Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and as a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love.”

Perry was found dead at his home in Los Angeles, and TMZ reported that EMS were called to the home for cardiac arrest, but that no medication was found at the scene and foul play is not suspected.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department later told PEOPLE that officers responded to a call at Perry’s address regarding the death of a man in his 50s, though authorities would not confirm the identity of the deceased.

“We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry,” Warner Bros. TV, which produced Prijatelje, said in a statement.

“Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. family. Television Group. The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many,” the statement continued. “This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans.”

On Monday, Perry shared the latest Instagram post showing him in a hot tub at night with the caption: “Oh so hot water swirling around makes you feel good? I’m Mattman.”

“Mattman” is the name he has used in recent days when posting on social media, often including Batman-related references and images.

“He was having fun,” a source told PEOPLE of his “Mattman” posts, which came from an idea Perry was working on for the show.

An insider said Perry has also signed on to star in a new drama film, unworthywhich was on hold due to the strike, and recently moved to its new home after renovations.

“He was incredibly happy,” the source added.
