Added Carter: “Matthew was quickly admitted to Toronto Western Hospital where he was placed under excellent care and taken out of immediate danger. Matthew was transferred today to a rehabilitation center at his home in Omaha where he will undergo extensive therapy. Now he has a long, hard road ahead until recovery.”

Catherine Lyons, who works on Sweet’s management team at Russell Carter Artist Management, created a GoFundMe page to help the singer/songwriter’s stroke recovery.

“Matthew Sweet, a longtime inspiration and dear friend of ours, suffered a debilitating stroke last week in Toronto while at the start of a national tour,” she wrote alongside the fundraiser. “He has been unexpectedly and tragically forced to leave the road and embark on a long, uncertain road to recovery. We are asking for financial assistance at this difficult time from his family, friends and fans. Without insurance or income from touring, Matthew faces an enormous financial burden.” She further explained that “health care is not free for Americans in Canada” and that Sweet must “be returned to the United States by air ambulance with medical personnel, to a specialized rehabilitation center, where he will receive round-the-clock care and therapy for six weeks.”
