Matthias Wirtz Cause of Death: How did Matthias Wirtz die?
Matthias Wirtz died in the city on December 26, 2022, in a fire in an apartment building. Where he lived, there were 4 units of the building, all of which were damaged in the fire.
The incident happened around 1 a.m. when a two-alarm fire broke out at a home on Quinnipiac. Emergency crews were called and extinguished the fire by the end of 4:30 am.
Matija was injured while driving a fire engine. When he was injured, he was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
North Haven Fire Chief Paul Januszewski said,
“It is a tragic loss for North Haven firefighters and all of our families. He was everyone’s friend.”
However, the cause of the fire is still unclear.
Bisson said,
“He was found unconscious and unresponsive. Life-saving measures including CPR and the use of a defibrillator were administered until the firefighter arrived at Yale New Haven Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.”
Chief Paul Januszewski said,
“It’s a tragic loss for the North Haven Fire Department and all of our families.”

Jazuszewski said at the scene of the fire during a press conference,
“He was a great person. He was a great family man. He would do anything for anyone. Wirtz, 46, was found outside the building with firefighters and paramedics working to save his life as other crews, including those from New Haven and East Haven, worked to extinguish the blaze that displaced 13.”
The city authorities announced in a press release,
“He left behind his wife and mother,” said the chief. He was a decorated member of the department that responded to the attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11.”
Firefighters said,
“He began his firefighting career as a volunteer with North Haven’s North East Volunteer Fire Company #4 in 1996. The procession will take his body from the hospital to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington where an autopsy will be performed.”
Governor Ned Lamon said,
“The death of Matthias Wirtz, a North Haven firefighter, is heartbreaking and we honor his bravery in responding to a multi-alarm apartment building fire early this morning that displaced more than a dozen people.”
“This is particularly upsetting as it comes at a time of year when families and friends gather to celebrate the holiday season. His death is a painful reminder that emergency responders work every day of the year, 24 hours a day, and often miss holidays with their families to protect the people of our state.”

Retired East Haven firefighter Mike Torino said,
“We are beside ourselves because of the loss. Matty was a big part of our band. He has been with us for 20 years as a member and drummer. I think we will remember his raspy voice, big personality and laugh the most. He was a very gifted, caring person. He would give you a trap in the front and a shirt in the back.”
