Achorn skillfully presents the personalities, demographics, and rivalries that influenced the election and nomination process of 1860. The Whig Party was exhausted and torn apart by nativism and slavery. The Catholic opposition was strong. There is also anti-German sentiment. The opposing forces of abolitionism and union preservation rocked the country. The Democrats were divided while the Republicans were divided. Total failure, democratic convention. There were no signs of commitment.
Three years earlier, the Supreme Court had enshrined slavery in the constitution with its infamous Dred Scott ruling. Not much could be done except war or constitutional changes. The law developed out of slavery.
In 1858, during the Republican convention in Illinois, Abraham Lincoln delivered what would become known as the “House Divided” speech. He quoted a passage from the book of Matthew that says, “A house divided against itself cannot stand,” clearly showing his Baptist upbringing. Although he was a deist, Lincoln valued the Scriptures. Achorn claimed to think that “pain and failure are endemic to human life.” Humans were only capable of so much. The “unfathomable” God was not in charge of the rest.
