When writing music, Matty Healy prefers not to touch his personal life.
During an appearance on Joshua Citarella Doomscroll podcast on Tuesday, October 22, the 1975 frontman revealed his thoughts on writing songs about past relationships.
“Last year I became a much more famous public figure for a lot of different reasons. The only reason I cared about was what I was doing,” Healy, 35, who dated Taylor Swift for several months in 2023, said.
“So I think a lot of artists get very interested in their own lore or get interested in things that happened outside of their art that people know about and want to address,” he continued. “And honestly, you know what I mean?”

On the first record in 1975, Healy was more open to writing about heartbreak and “all that relationship talk” — but he no longer feels the need to.
“I’d be lying a little bit if I made a record about, I don’t know, everything that’s been said about me or my occasional romantic relationships or whatever I’ve become known for, just because I was famous,” he said.
“I think it’s an obvious thing to get away with. And I’m just not interested in that. And I think maintaining the status quo is something I’m always fighting against,” he continued. “So the idea of making a record about something that happened to me personally, by the time it’s going to be released is about two years old, I see people doing that too, and it’s not interesting.”
While Healy chooses to keep their relationship out of the lyrics of her songs, Swift, 34, detailed their short-lived romance on her latest studio album Department for tortured poets. The singer-songwriter seemingly sings about him in songs including “Guilty as Sin?”, “Fresh Out the Slammer,” “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” and “loml.”
On the song “broken,” Swift seemingly revealed that their relationship wasn’t meant to last as she sang about rekindling an old flame, only to see the romance crash and burn.

“It was legendary / It was instant / It was unnecessary / It should have been left buried,” he sings. “Oh, what a brave roar / What a gentle farewell / The coward claimed to be a lion / Combing the braid of lies / ‘I’ll never leave’ / ‘Never mind’.”

After his split from Swift, Healy moved on with model Gabbriette Bechtel. After announcing their romance in September 2023, the couple announced their engagement in June. Swift, meanwhile, has been dating Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce since last summer.
