Mauris Noronha (1975-2024) was an Indian businessman, poker player, social worker and politician. He came to attention for distributing ration packs and other essential items to over 600,000 poor people during the COVID-19 lockdown. On February 8, 2024, he shot himself after shooting politician Abhishek Ghosalkar during a Facebook Live meeting.

Mauris Oliver Noronha was born on Monday, December 22, 1975 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India (age 48 at the time of death). His zodiac sign is Capricorn. He spent his childhood in the Dhobi Talao area of south Mumbai and later the family moved to north Mumbai. He attended Our Lady of Dolors High School in Mumbai. Mauris Noronha started working as a social worker during the COVID-19 lockdown. He planned to move to the United States with his family after the COVID-19 outbreak; however, when he saw others there struggling to get food and make money, he started donating food and other necessities to them.

He also provided sewing machines to more than 250 women, allowing them to learn to sew and become self-sufficient. He had saved around $250,000 (Rs 2 crore) as necessary funds to move to the US; however, he spent around Rs 15 crore to help the poor, needy and vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also saved Rs 70 lakh to pay home loans but changed his plans to help people. He contested the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections from Dahisar 1st constituency in 2022 but lost.

In June 2022, he was arrested when he returned to India from the United States. A 48-year-old woman, a resident of IC Colony in Borivali West, complained that Morris raped her at his house in 2018. She said she and her husband first met him in 2014 at a gym. He then inquired about the land the couple wanted to sell and gave her a mobile phone for her birthday. In 2015, the couple invested Rs 88 lakh in his cosmetics company Faith Salon.

On March 14, 2018, Noronha called the woman to her home on the pretext of repayment, began to force himself on her, and touched her inappropriately while taking photos. He threatened to leak the photos on social media and have her husband killed by Daoud Ibrahim’s gang members. The police arrested him under sections 376, 420, 354 (B and C) and 506 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) for rape, insulting the modesty of a woman, cheating and threatening.

Mauris Noronha shot himself on February 8, 2024; he was 48 years old at the time. He did a Facebook live session with Abhishek Ghosalkar, son of prominent Shiv Sena UBT leader Vinod Ghosalkar, and the two reportedly met to end each other hostility and became friends for the development of IC colonial areas. Noronha allegedly killed Gosalka because he believed he had implicated him in a false rape case. His last words were “God bless you all” before he shot Gosalkar and committed suicide.
