Maya Hawke Reveals Acting Tip She Got From Dad Ethan Hawke: ‘Some Kind of Little Secret’ (Exclusive)

Maya Hawke is following in her father Ethan Hawke’s footsteps as a movie star.

And the 25-year-old actress exclusively revealed to PEOPLE the “secret” advice her father gave her while on Maestro premiere of the film on Tuesday in LA.

“I like to do something where in every role I play, I plant a seed of truth, like a little secret,” Maya tells PEOPLE while discussing her role as Jamie Bernstein in Maestro — daughter of American conductor Leonard Bernstein and Costa Rican actress Felicia Montealegra.

“Actually, my dad taught me this, just to put some thing about the character that speaks to who you really are and you sneak some secret message to someone in your life or to yourself or to your psychiatrist or whatever in every job that you do.”

He adds about his character: “this one definitely had enough space for that.”

At the event — which took place at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Museum — Maya added to PEOPLE that her role in Maestro, “It felt very natural.”

“I was able to draw a lot from my own life experience and feel what their own energy brought forward, and what the Bernsteins lent to this film,” she says.

Maya also revealed that she was due to meet Jamie Bernstein for the first time on Tuesday night.

“I haven’t met her yet, but I had her amazing book, The famous father of the girlwhich I studied and read to better understand her and to better understand her view of her family,” Maya tells PEOPLE.

“What struck me so much was her grace and gratitude and confidence and perspective, both in the moment in her life where things were happening, and afterwards when I was thinking about it. So it was an amazing thing,” she adds. .

Ethan, 53, shares Maya with his ex-wife, actress Uma Thurman, with whom he was married from 1998 to 2005. The former couple also have a son together, Levon Roan Thurman-Hawke, 21.

Meanwhile, the actor also shares daughters Clementine Jane, 15, and Indiana, 12, with husband Ryan Shawhughes.
