“So it was a family shame,” Ethan jokingly admitted to his daughter
Ethan Hawke is still taking a little friendly word from his family over the viral moment he was caught on camera flirting with Rihanna.
In a new video clip he shared Diversity, the 52-year-old actor and his daughter Maya Hawke jokingly addressed an incident at the 2015 NBA All-Star Game, where Ethan and his then-13-year-old son Levon happened to be sitting next to Rihanna. The photos recorded Childhood The Oscar nominee animatedly chats with the music superstar, 35.
“The paparazzi caught me openly flirting with Rihanna,” Ethan said in the clip, before Maya, 25, cut in and clarified with a laugh: “Openly trying to.”
“Yeah, he’s trying to flirt, and it was a family shame,” Ethan replied. “So you really hit a nerve.”
“No, it’s family pride,” Maya told her father sweetly, letting him know she didn’t begrudge him his not-so-smooth flirting game.
While Ethan might have kept the awkward moment buried in the archives, he actually relived it himself earlier this year after Rihanna rocked the Super Bowl halftime show.
In an Instagram post on Feb. 13, Ethan raved about the Fenty mogul’s “brilliant” performance and took the opportunity to share a series of throwback photos of him, Levon and Rihanna sitting courtside at a basketball game.

The photos captured Ethan’s strategic maneuvering unfold, as the first image showed Levon actually sitting right next to Rihanna while the game was underway. But another photo revealed that Ethan switched seats with his son at some point to be closer to the “Umbrella” singer. By the third shot, Ethan seemed to be completely flirting.
“I hope my son finds it in his heart to forgive dad for taking his moment,” Ethan captioned the post, acknowledging the awkwardness factor.
At the time, some of Ethan’s celebrity friends were ribbing him about the photos in the comments section. Gwyneth Paltrow took aim at her Big expectations costar’s downcast demeanor, as one photo saw him reclining while talking to the Grammy winner.
“Can you sit up straight for God’s sake?” she wrote. “You’re sitting next to Rihanna!”
Andy Cohen also chimed in, writing, “BEST PIC EVER.”

Maya used the viral moment to lightheartedly troll her dad on Father’s Day last year. The Stranger Things star re-shared a fan post on his Instagram with photos of Ethan and Rihanna from the All-Star Game, writing, “Happy Father’s Day especially to Ethan Hawke who made his son trade places with him so he could get Rihanna.”
Maya wrote on her post, “Happy Father’s Day Dad.”
