Recording Lopez vs. Lopez is “very healing” for father-daughter duo Mayan Lopez and George Lopez.
The 27-year-old actress opened up to PEOPLE at the Avalon TV premiere in Los Angeles on Sunday about how their relationship has evolved since filming the NBC sitcom
“I think we have a deep respect for each other,” she says. “I think when we walk past that door, we’re, yes, father and daughter between scenes. He will hug me, he will kiss me. We’re always connected, but we can put our hats on and be creative and critical of each other in a way that only two performers talk to each other and feel safe, which is something I didn’t always feel with him. ”
“To feel it now, it’s very healing,” adds Mayan.

Mayan Lopez says ‘Lopez vs. Lopez’ is a ‘relationship metamorphosis’ with dad George after Fallout
Lopez vs. Lopez depicts a fictionalized version of Mayan and George’s relationship as they rekindle their relationship after being estranged for most of Mayan’s teenage years.
The show somewhat mirrors Mayan and George’s real life, and George told PEOPLE in August 2022 that the couple hadn’t spoken in “years” but had gotten back together due to the COVID-19 pandemic
“We really became a family again,” Mayan told PEOPLE at the time. “It’s so crazy to think that two years ago we weren’t talking very regularly, if at all.”
“With the show, I’m having similar conversations, difficult conversations that I’ve had with him or that I’ve had with him — and now we’re doing it on TV so millions of people can see it,” she continued. “But what’s so wonderful is that we’ve both been through a lot of pain, but love has always brought us together.”

Speaking to PEOPLE at Sunday’s event, Mayan reveals that things are better than ever between her and her dad.
“We’re still in a very good place,” she says. “I think it will be interesting as last season was so new for us. I’m very curious to see how things will change in the second season and I think it will change in our relationship. I love my dad too and I’m so thankful for this experience because we’re really stronger than we were, so I’m excited to see where we can go.”
Lopez vs. Lopezco-created by Mayan, George and showrunner Debby Wolfe, was officially renewed for a second season in May, according to Diversity.
