Profession
In the ninth grade, he participated in his first rap competition. During recess, he often practiced rapping with his friends. In an interview, talking about his school days, Kode said:
I was competing against 12th graders and I was the first to debut under a stage name. The scene was still young at the time and I had to create warriors to battle it because there were hardly any people in the scene or even no scene at all. At first, people didn’t take it seriously, but now I get so many messages saying how proud they are of me.”
He has participated in more than 80 rap battles (as of 2021) and quickly became famous in the rap battle world. Some of his popular rap songs include “Pareshan” (2020), “Rasta” (2020), “Doob” (2020), and “Kheecho” (2021).
MC Kode is also the co-founder of Spit Dope Inc., an organization that organizes competitions to make underground hip-hop more accessible. In an interview, he talked about his early days as a rap fighter:
There was a time when we were amateurs, fighting in the streets in baggy clothes. Anyone could post a status online and call for a fight. So I was at a cypher in Hauz Khas, where I met Encore ABJ and another rapper MC Snub, and they invited us to another cypher, and then we thought, if we meet every week, why not do it under one name. That’s when we started Spit Dope, and anyone could be a part of it. It all happened very spontaneously. Also, it was so surreal that something that started in Brooklyn happened in an Indian context. I feel like it hasn’t officially started yet because Spit Dope is not an entity, it’s a movement. It started with four boys fighting in a park, and then we did an event in Mumbai and it sold out. “
In addition to participating in rap competitions, he also serves as a judge and host for rap competitions across the country. In an interview, he shared the development of rap competitions in the past few years. He said,
We all worked hard. In the early days, I had an easier life because I made a lot of money from college tournaments. I would win tournaments and invest the money into the culture at Spit Dope to make it more efficient. I worked in a call center, which was probably not legal at the time. Calm was working as a promoter at Hauz Khas, so all of us were trying to make ends meet.”
dispute
- He faced off against BK, the son of a political leader in Tripura, in a rap contest, where he rapped about the politician. Soon, he began receiving threatening calls from cities across India. In an interview, Kode said:
Someone found my university and called to inquire about the situation. Then I got two more calls from the police in the Northeast. [of India] Threaten me before I get one [in New Delhi]”
- In 2021, his old rap battle video which was released on June 12, 2016 went viral on YouTube. He received strong criticism and hatred from netizens for using abusive and anti-Hindu words in his video. A few lines in his video are,
If you are a Hindu, I will fuck your Gau, I will fuck your sacred cow… I will fuck your Mahabharata, Geeta Geeta.”
Soon after the video went viral, he started receiving threatening calls and abusive comments. Later, he posted an apology video and a post on his Instagram account, demanding the removal of all videos and songs on the live streaming app and YouTube. He then shared a cryptic post on his Instagram account suggesting suicide, and since then, he has been missing from his hometown of New Delhi.
Later, a photo of a dead body surfaced on Twitter, with the Twitter user claiming that it was that of MC Kode, which upon further research turned out to be fake. After a week-long search, the Delhi Police tracked him down in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh on June 9, 2021. According to Atul Thakur, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South, the rapper was found at his friend’s house in Jabalpur on June 2.
Facts/Trivia
- To pay for school and college, he worked at a call center from 10th grade until graduation.
- In an interview, he shared that he was inspired to start rapping after watching the Hollywood movie 8 Mile (2002). He said,
The movie really inspired a lot of people, probably because people knew the type of music at the time. There weren’t a lot of artists in the country at the time who could say anything meaningful. But that’s the power of hip-hop. A middle-aged white guy rapping about his problems with a brown kid across the world was beautiful.”
- After his videos sparked controversy in 2021, he deleted all his posts on Instagram and his YouTube channel was also deleted.
- He is often spotted smoking in his live videos and interviews.
- He has a tattoo of “51” on the left side of his neck.
- Kode considers Indian rapper “Smoke” to be one of the best Battle Rappers.
- He also teaches rap at the free hip-hop school, Dharavi Dream Project. In an interview, he talked about the project. He said,
The first thing I like to do is sensitivity training. In India, it is easy to cross the line and we have to realize that we live in a country with a lot of sensitive people. We need to understand what kind of jokes and sarcasm we can make and what kind of jokes and sarcasm we can’t make.”
- In an interview, he shared the reason for keeping the stage name MC Kode. He said,
I think my codes are more ethical than the average artist’s. They’re like survival instincts for me. I used to do a lot of coding, so I guess it started from then, but then it became this.”
