McDonald’s McFlurry has received a major makeover.
On Sept. 4, the fast-food chain announced that it was phasing out the plastic lid for its frozen treats and introducing a “four-fold” cup instead. Designed to further McDonald’s efforts to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly, the new packaging will appear in restaurants nationwide starting September 10.
The burger brand also announced that the McFlurry will now be offered in a mini size in addition to the standard stand-up size.
“The Mini McFlurry is heading to participating US restaurants nationwide and will be available on the McDonald’s App and through McDelivery starting September 10,” McDonald’s USA said in a statement.

“Got a friend who always wants ‘just a bite’? Instead of getting an extra spoon, you can get them their own Mini McFlurry. Or maybe you’re looking for a quick afternoon pick-me-up… The Mini McFlurry is perfect for you too,” the statement continues.
The new McFlurry serving size will also come in the company’s new packaging.
In October 2023, McDonald’s got rid of its McFlurry spoons. For many customers, this utensil was confusing because some often mistook its hollow shape for a straw. Instead, it simply served as a spindle for funneling and mixing sweet toppings.
McFlurry’s new spoon design features a “smaller black spoon that uses less plastic,” according to a statement at the time.
McDonald’s said the “small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste”.
McDonald’s is rolling out a new Kit Kat Banana Split McFlurry just in time for summer
In July, the brand introduced an innovative McFlurry flavor: Kit Kat banana split. Made with vanilla soft serve, real banana chunks, strawberry clusters and Kit Kat chunks, the limited edition treat was loaded with candy.
In May, the home of the Big Mac launched the Grandma McFlurry. It featured “delicious syrup,” crunchy candy pieces (“like grandma’s favorite treat she hid in her purse!”), and vanilla soft serve. The Grandma McFlurry was meant to be “cute — just like grandma,” the company said.
New McFlurry flavors have appeared over the years, including Strawberry Shortcake McFlurry in April 2023 and Peanut Butter Crunch McFlurry in August 2023.
