“I promised you some more thoughts on ‘Blood and Cheese’ and Maelor the Missing after my commentary on the first two episodes HotD season 2, Son for Son and Rhaenyra the Wicked,” he explained on Wednesday.

“They were great episodes: well-written, well-directed, powerfully acted. A great way to start the new season,” Martin said, adding that fans and critics “seemed to agree.”

He noted that “the handling of ‘Blood and Cheese’ and the death of Prince Jaehaerys” received “significant criticism”.

George RR Martin criticizes book adaptations: ‘They never improve’

“From the comments I saw [online]opinion was divided there. Magazine readers Fire and blood the sequence was unsatisfying, a disappointment, watered down compared to what they expected. Viewers who had not read the book had no such problems. Most of them found the sequence really harrowing, tragic, horrifying, nightmarish, etc. Some said they were brought to tears. I agreed on both sides.”

He then pointed out the key variations between the projects, especially the age and number of children in one house.

“In my book, Aegon and Helaena have three children, not two. The twins, Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, are six years old. They have a younger brother, Maelor, who is two years old. When Blood and Cheese break into Helaena and the kids, they tell her that the debt collectors have come to avenge the death of Prince Lucerys: son for son. However, since Helaena has two sons, they demand that she choose which one will die. She resists and offers her own life instead, but the killers insist it must be the son. If he doesn’t name one, he will kill all three children. In order to save the life of the twins, Helaena is named Maelor. But Blood instead kills the older boy, Jaehaerys, while Cheese tells little Maelor that his mother wanted to kill him. Not sure if the boy is old enough to understand that.”

“There is no Maelor in there The house of the dragonjust twins,” he continued.

“I still believe that the scene in the book is stronger. Readers have the right to that,” Martin said, adding: “The two killers are more cruel in the book. I thought the actors who played the killers in the series were excellent… but the characters are more cruel, tough and scary in Fire and blood.”

Before ending his lengthy post, Martin wrote: “Bigger and more venomous butterflies are coming, if THE HOUSE OF THE DRAGON continues with some changes being considered for season 3 and 4.”

Shortly after, HBO released a statement defending the changes that showrunner Ryan Condal and his team had made.

“There are few bigger fans of George RR Martin and his book Fire and blood but the creative team at The house of the dragonboth in production and at HBO,” an HBO spokesperson told Deadline.

“Typically, when adapting a book for the screen, with its own format and limitations, the director ends up having to make tough decisions about the characters and stories the audience will follow,” the statement said. “We believe Ryan Condal and his team have done an outstanding job and the millions of fans the show has garnered over its first two seasons will continue to enjoy it.”

The house of the dragon is set almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and it is based on Martin’s book Fire and blood. The author created the series with Condal and works as an executive producer. Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Max.
