McDonald’s McNugget Buddies Are Back After More Than 25 Years

McDonald’s wants you to play with their food, or at least their food toys.

After more than 25 years off the market, fast food fans are bringing back McNugget Buddies: nostalgic Happy Meal collectibles.

Starting December 11, six different McNugget Buddy collectibles, each with a different outfit and backstory, will be available at McDonald’s nationwide. Toy Retribution comes in collaboration with New York artist Kerwin Frost, who helped redesign the mascots and created a custom meal for fans.

The new friends are inspired by Frost’s childhood in Harlem, and one of the toys is a miniature version of the DJ, aptly named Kerwin Frost and adorned with a matching facial tattoo. Other McNugget friends are Don Bernice, Uptown Moe, Waffutu, BRRRICK and Darla. Each toy is decorated with interchangeable clothes.

The Kerwin Frost Box includes one McNugget Buddy, fries, a soft drink and your choice of 10 McNuggets or a Big Mac. In addition, merchandise from the partnership will be available online starting December 11, while supplies last.

McDonald’s likes to reprise previous Happy Meal menu items and toys.

After the famous McRib — which consists of boneless pulled pork slathered in barbecue sauce and topped with sliced ​​onions and dill pickles on a hoagie-style bun — went on a “McRib Farewell Tour” last October, the fast food spot decided to bring the favorite menu item again at select locations for a limited time this month only.

And in October, McDonald’s reintroduced Boo Buckets for Halloween.

The Halloween-themed bowls, which can later be used for trick-or-treating, officially returned in mid-October, the fast-food chain announced. Festive bins, first introduced in 1986, are back in 2022 for the first time since 2016.

In one of McDonald’s most viral moments this year, the brand honored Grimace, the big purple mascot introduced in 1972, with a limited-time menu item.

McDonald’s celebrated Grimace’s 52nd birthday with a special dinner called Grimace’s Birthday Meal, which came with a purple milkshake, your choice of a Big Mac or 10 chicken nuggets and medium fries. But the earthquake caught the world’s attention.

The milkshake became an internet sensation, and Grimace (who is actually a giant taste bud) was the face of the “Grimace Shake” trend on TikTok, where users created mini horror movies mocking the effects of drinking the new McDonald’s milkshake.

While that trend probably wasn’t what McDonald’s had in mind when it ditched the jerky, the company agreed. Two weeks after announcing the special menu, the fast food chain shared a close-up of the furry mascot on Instagram. “Pretending not to see the cherry grimace trend,” the post read.
