dispute
Booked for hurting religious sentiments
On August 30, 2023, an FIR was filed against Meezaan Jafri, directors Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao, and producer Bhushan Kumar. The charges related to a scene in the film Yaariyan 2 in which Meezaan Jafri wore a kirpan, which was considered offensive to Sikh sentiments. The FIR was filed in Jalandhar, Punjab, under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code (intentional and malicious conduct intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting religion or religious beliefs). On September 1, 2023, another case with the same allegations was filed against Meezaan Jafri and the film’s director and producer based on a complaint filed by a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Responding to the controversy, the film director claimed in an interview that Mizan wore a khukri and not a kirpan; however, SGPC members expressed displeasure claiming that Sikhs are well-versed in distinguishing between “kirpan” and “khukri”. Later, the filmmakers edited the scene so that the kirpan was blurred, but the gatra, the cloth strap used to carry the kirpan, was still visible.
