Mel Gibson's 9 Children: All About His Sons and Daughters

Between his professional projects, Mel Gibson was busy with his nine children: daughters Hannah and Lucia and sons Christian, Edward, William, Louis, Milo, Thomas and Lars.

After dating for several years, Mel married Australian dental nurse Robyn Moore on June 7, 1980. In the same year, they had their first and only daughter, Hannah, and after her six sons: Edward, Christian, William, Louis, Milo and Thomas. In 2009, Moore filed for divorce after nearly 29 years of marriage.

After splitting from Moore, Mel began dating Russian singer-songwriter and pianist Oksana Grigorieva. The couple had their daughter Lucia in 2009.

At the beginning of 2010, Mel and Grigorieva broke up. Their split was followed by a tumultuous custody and legal battle, which included allegations that Mel assaulted Grigorieva. He started dating equestrian and screenwriter Rosalind Ross in 2014, and they had their ninth child, Larsa, in 2017.

Gibson’s children rarely appear in public with him, but in September 2024, his two youngest children, Lucia and Lars, joined him on the red carpet at the premiere of his film A monster summer in Los Angeles.

Mel and Moore welcomed their first child, Hannah Mae, on November 24, 1980 in Australia. Mel was not present at her birth because he was in Egypt filming Gallipoli — but he switched on over the phone.

In 2000, Hannah worked as a production assistant on the set of her father’s film A patriot and as a make-up artist on his film What women want.

On September 16, 2006, Hannah married Grammy-nominated blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd. The traditional Catholic ceremony was performed in Latin at Holy Family Catholic Church, built by her father, in Agoura Hills, California. The couple has six children.

Hannah’s Instagram bio describes her as a “mother,” “wife,” and “hypnobirthing educator.” She also shares about her passion for reel dancing on her account.

Christian Gibson, 42

Mel and Moore’s twin sons, Christian and Edward, were born in Australia on June 2, 1982. Christian attended the University of Colorado.

Christian has worked on several TV series and films as a cinematographer, including his father’s films Hacksaw Ridge and Dad is at home 2.

According to his Instagram, Christian lives between Los Angeles and Mexico City and enjoys working outdoors.

Mel and Moore welcomed Edward on June 2, 1982 in Australia. He is more private than some of his siblings and is not involved in the film industry. According to 90265 MagazineEd studied at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco, where he majored in glassblowing.

His company, Natural Edge, sells art and furniture made from reclaimed wood panels imported from Fiji. Edward was inspired to start an interior design company after living on the remote island of Fiji for two years.

William “Will” Gibson, 39

In 1985, Mel and Moore had a son, William “Will”. Despite his father’s fame, Will leads a private life.

His younger brother Milo celebrated Will on National Sibling Day 2019 with a carousel of photos of his siblings. “Happy National Sibling Day,” he wrote in the caption. “You have no idea how much I needed this. Family is for life, keep them close, they are the ones who will hopefully stay there.”

Louie Gibson, 36

Louie was born to Mel and Moore in Australia in 1988. In 2011, he graduated from Chapman University in Orange, California with a degree in film. Louie has directed horror films including Happy hunting and The West Manifesto.

In 2016, the director got married Americans actress Annet Mahendru, who also starred in his film The West Manifesto. They share at least one child together. In November 2022, the couple said Bare magazine that they had a healthy working relationship. “I could see Annet transform so many times over the years,” Louie told the outlet. “I would say we trusted each other. Which we already have in our personal life. I guess it gets passed down. I hope to work with Annet for the rest of my journey.”

Mahendru added: “There is no one else in the world who calms me down like Lou. On our first date, we said we were going to have ten kids together — I think we meant kids and movies!”

Milo Gibson, 33

Mel and Moore welcomed Milo on November 16, 1990 in Australia. After graduating from high school in Malibu, California, Milo worked as a massage therapist. Years later he worked as an electrician before following in his father’s footsteps and pursuing an acting career.

“It’s very scary to make that change,” Milo told PEOPLE of his career in 2017. “But one day I realized that I don’t want to turn 50 and regret not trying something that I’m passionate about.”

He worked with his dad Hacksaw Ridge and his older brother Louie directed him inside The West Manifesto. Milo said about working with his father: “We had a lot of fun, but it was a professional relationship. Watching Mel direct was amazing; he’s damn good at it.”

Thomas Gibson, 25

Thomas was born in LA on April 14, 1999 and is the youngest child of Mel and Moore. Of his siblings, he was the only minor when his mother filed for divorce in April 2009. Since his parents divorced, Thomas has kept his life private.

Grigori’s pregnancy was announced just six weeks after Moore filed for divorce from Melo after 29 years of marriage. Mel and Moore have been separated since 2006.

In 2022, Grigorieva released a music video for her single “Lemonade” featuring a mother-daughter duo dancing together. “It tells the story of some challenging times in my past and the person who was by my side every step of the way, with her unconditional purity, loyalty and love. That person is my daughter Lucy, the inspiration of my life,” the singer wrote on Instagram.

That same year, Lucia and her mom traveled to Manawaiopuna Falls in Hawaii to visit the waterfalls featured in Jurassic Park.

In 2023, Grigorieva showed off one of Lucia’s drawings on Instagram, writing in the caption, “My daughter’s drawing, showing global vibrational sensations 💙.”

Lars Gerard, Mel’s ninth and Ross’ first child, was born on January 22, 2017 in LA

“They are thrilled and Lars is wonderful,” a source shared with PEOPLE.

Earlier, in September 2016, Mel and Ross announced that they were expecting their first child together.

“Mel and Rose are so excited about the baby,” a friend close to the couple told PEOPLE at the time. “Mel loves being a dad and he and Rose can’t wait to be parents together. The last two years have been some of his happiest years he’s ever had.”
