The weather service said damage to buildings due to lightning strikes, public transport disruptions and flooding can be expected in the affected areas.

The warning for Friday covers much of south-west England, parts of Wales, the Midlands and west London, and is in place from 12pm to 8pm.

The second warning is in place throughout Saturday from 1am and covers all of Wales and south-west England, the Midlands and parts of south-east England.

The Met Office warned that hail and frequent lightning could be accompanied by “thunderstorms and heavy showers”.

Up to 70 mm of rain could fall in the worst-hit areas on Saturday.

The stormy weather followed a warm and dry spell that saw temperatures reach 25C in Inverness on Wednesday, with highs of 26C expected on Thursday, according to the forecaster.

Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud said: “We’ve been spoiled with almost the last of summer’s hurray, but there’s a bit of a change as we approach Friday and especially the weekend.”

A “slight drop” in temperatures is expected over the weekend, with highs of 24C forecast for East Anglia on Saturday, followed by a low of 20C in the area on Sunday, he added.

Since September 17, the UK has recorded an average of 49.5mm of rainfall this month – which is typical for this time of year, Mr Stroud said.

“Sequential rain showers” and “autumn normal conditions” are expected next week, he added.
