Michael Caine Makes Rare Red Carpet Appearance at ‘The Great Escaper’ Premiere in London

Michael Caine stepped out for the premiere of his latest film based on a true story.

On Wednesday, the 90-year-old actor appeared on the red carpet at the film’s premiere The great fugitive at BFI Southbank in London.

Caine was joined by director Oliver Parker and co-stars Will Fletcher, Danielle Vitalis, John Standing and Laura Marcus.

Caine’s co-star in the film, Glenda Jackson, died in June at the age of 87. The two-time Oscar winner and politician died peacefully at her home in Blackheath, London, after a short illness, her agent confirmed at the time.

Inspired by a true storyThe great fugitive stars Caine as Bernard Jordan, a man who in 2014 “staged a ‘great escape’ from his nursing home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades on the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings,” according to the synopsis. The synopsis adds that Bernie’s 48-hour adventure “also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene,” played by Jackson. The film “celebrates their enduring love, but always keeping in mind the lessons we could learn from the greatest generation.”

In a recent interview with The TelegraphCaine suggested The great fugitive is “probably” his last film.

“Now I’m 90 bloody years old and I can’t walk properly and all that. I’m kind of retired now,” he told the newspaper, according to NME.

“With COVID and all that, I didn’t work for three years and I thought I was done. And suddenly I did it — and I had such a great time,” Caine said of making the new film, adding, “I was so happy to do it. I just loved the character of Bernie. I thought it was amazing, and it was so beautifully written.”

Back in 2021, Caine told a BBC radio show that he had “a problem with my spine which affects my legs so I can’t walk very well”. He said at the time that he thought his film Best Sellers would be his “last part” because “there aren’t really any scripts that come out with an 88-year-old leading man.”

The great fugitive is in UK cinemas on October 6.
