Michael McKean Teases This is Spinal Tap Sequel 40 Years Later: ‘It’s Tragic in the Funniest Way’ (Exclusive)

Michael McKean acknowledges the sequel This is Spinal Tap it will be “tragic”.

The Trace actor, 77, teased Spinal puncture IIsequel to the cult classic 1984 mockumentary about the titular fictitious ’80s band, in an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE at Diplomat Season 2 premieres on Monday, October 28.

“If you think those guys were sad when they were young…” McKean said of the Spinal Tap band members he played, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer. “It’s tragic in the funniest way – hopefully.”

Slated for release next spring, directed by Rob Reiner Spinal puncture II will star the original cast, including the aforementioned trio, alongside Fran Drescher as the band’s publicist Bobbi Flekman. Reiner revealed in 2023 that Elton John and Paul McCartney will also appear in the sequel.

McKean, who played David St. Hubbins, told PEOPLE that “it was fun” reuniting with his co-stars to film the sequel.

“We always have fun,” he added of his longtime friendship with them.

The popular “rockumentary” told the story of Spinal Tap as a filmmaker documenting the raucous fictional band through their ups and downs.

McKean said it was his favorite memory This is Spinal Tap was “show it to people and get them to like it” because making it was a “struggle”.

Explaining the pains of making it This is Spinal TapMcKean told PEOPLE, “We had 20 hours of film and we cut it down to 85 minutes. It was a long, long job.”

“But once we started showing it to people and knowing that the audience that was there for the movie really experienced it — it was never going to be Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters it was that year,” he added.
