Before taking on the role of Missouri Tigers men’s basketball assistant coach, Porter had a successful basketball career. Michael’s basketball career takes a turn towards music.
First of all, Porter played basketball for Athletes in Action, a Cincinnati-based Christian sports league that features ex-college athletes. Athletes were dispatched by AIA to coach high school kids in Cincinnati’s inner city. In 1991, Michael set up Bible study groups and basketball league tutoring. Many of the students became close friends with him.
Because the words were difficult for the pupils to understand, he started rapping, which was something that most of the students enjoyed at the time, to teach them about the Bible and life lessons. Porter began writing raps as his new teaching strategy despite having no musical training. The pupil began to understand him and his important lessons. He considered switching to rapping as a career, but he clung to basketball.
Porter gained the majority of his basketball knowledge while working as the head coach of Upward Basketball from 2003 to 2006. Along with basketball abilities, Michael helped athletes hone confidence-boosting and character-strengthening qualities. Porter spent five seasons playing professionally with AIA, competing around the world.
After serving as an assistant coach for the first two years of Porter’s tenure at Mizzou, Porter was appointed director of player development prior to the 2019–20 season. The Missouri Tigers men’s basketball team’s three-year, $1.125 million contract recently came to an end on the last day of April this year and wasn’t renewed.
