Initially, she wanted to be a news reporter, but after being told she didn’t have the physical qualifications required for the job, she became a news footage editor for NBC and Fox. Her career took a major turn on September 11, 2001, when she was asked to review and edit countless hours of disturbing footage of the 9/11 attacks in New York. The news channel offered therapy to its editors as they were editing one of the most horrific videos in American history, but instead of going to therapy, Michelle continued to try stand-up comedy to get through her emotionally stressful job.

Michelle Buteau began to get involved in comedy after the 9/11 attacks in 2001 and made her television debut as a comedian in 2005 on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend. In 2007, she was selected to be a guest at the final Young Stand-Up Comedians Showcase at the HBO American Comedy Festival in Aspen, Colorado. She has since continued to perform stand-up on various shows such as Best Week Ever, Late Late Show, Lopez Tonight, Last Comic Standing, The Jenny McCarthy Show, and at several colleges, clubs, and comedy festivals across the United States. Buteau was also part of the Comedy Lineup on Netflix, where up-and-coming comedians each perform a 15-minute stand-up routine. In 2020, her stand-up special Welcome to Buteaupia premiered on Netflix.
