The light we carry, published in November 2022, is a collection of Obama’s experiences as a political figure, mother, spouse and woman in the world. Telling stories that offer “insightful reflections on change, challenge and power,” Obama’s work for her third book earned her a spot on The New York Times‘ bestseller list and earned her an Emmy nomination through a Netflix special with Oprah.

Half memoir and half self-help book, Obama’s documentary project emerged from the ongoing global political unrest and uncertainty in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE ahead of the book’s release, she shared her coping mechanisms and lessons she learned from reflecting on her life during the anxious years of 2020-2021.

“These are the things I tell myself when I have to pull myself together,” she told PEOPLE. “This is how I stay visible in a world that doesn’t necessarily see a tall black woman. This is how I stay armored when attacked. The book is that offer.
