Michelle Yeoh Makes a Glamorous Return to the 2024 Oscars in a Sequined Balenciaga Gown and Opera Gloves

Michelle Yeoh knows all about the glamor on the Oscars red carpet.

At the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, the actress — a host at this year’s ceremony — arrived on the red carpet in a sequined one-shoulder evening gown, tailored by Balenciaga.

Yeoh, 61, who was announced as an ambassador for the fashion house last November, styled a shimmering silver dress with black opera gloves and a pair of matching pumps.

She completed the look with a sleek updo and a natural, shimmery makeup look — and added a touch of sparkle with diamond leaf earrings designed by jewelry artist Cindy Chao and a watch that popped on her gloves.

Yeo is a pro when it comes to fashion for awards shows. Last year, she accepted an Oscar for her role as Evelyn Wang in Everything everywhere and at once at the 2023 Oscars in a feathered Dior Couture gown.

Stylist Jordan Johnson Chung accessorized the all-white ensemble with a bejeweled headband and earrings, both featuring Moussaieff diamonds. Another highlight: the look she chose for the 2023 Golden Globes, which Yeoh told PEOPLE is one of her favorites. “Armani Privé is so Armani, but it’s just the hair and the whole thing,” she said of the sparkling strapless design, which featured a peplum detail. “And Armani has always been one of my favorites anyway.”

On the power of her fashion choices, Yeoh told PEOPLE, “I’ve learned that fans crave that moment on the red carpet. I think that’s an integral part of what we do, whether we’ve created this magical movie or world for them, so it’s this is an extension of that. And to show them these incredible—almost like art—all these incredible designers to begin with, and then all the high fashion.”

She also learned what doesn’t work: “At the end of the day, I know who I am. You can’t let the dress wear you down and you can’t walk around saying, ‘I’m so embarrassed . . . I can’t breathe.’ You’re expected to sit there for three hours and say, ‘I’m going to die. And I can’t go to the bathroom.’ ”

Along with her, Yeoh will attend this year’s ceremony as a presenter Everything everywhere and at once actors Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis. This year’s lineup includes stars like Zendaya, Ariana Grande, Anya Taylor-Joy, Lupita Nyong’o and more.

The 96th Academy Awards will air live on ABC from the Dolby Theater on Sunday, March 10, at 7:00 PM ET.
