Mickey Guyton thinks of what he calls “one of the most proud moments” of his career.
In an exclusive interview with people who will celebrate the Montenegrin History Month, the star of country music, 41 years old, she recounted the incredible “empowerment” of experience with Keith Urban – while she was pregnant – at the 2020 ACM award to sing “What do you go to tell her?” Urban, 57, followed her on the piano on Grand Ole Opry House as she threw out texts dealing with the injustices that women face, especially those in color.
“It was 100% one of my most unusual moments,” Guyton says about his duet with Urban. “The song, first of all, sings about the oppression of women, as I stand at that stage, pregnant, in a very very conservative genre – I think it was definitely very proud of my moment.”
At the time, Guyton was expecting his son Grayon, who is now 3 years old, whom he shares with his wife Grant Savoy. She remembers many great successes for her when she was pregnant, despite “teaching as women to suffocate her career.”

“And I was all these things. And then the success started happening for me,” she continues. “That was really empowered. Guess what? It’s just sorry, but I’m pregnant and I managed to do on stage despite what you might think about what a woman should do as a career woman.”

Guyton noted that her career really “changed” and flourished when she began to deal with important questions such as discrimination. “I sing so long in the genre, trying to chase these light themes and experiences. My life does not fill that light. Country music is three chords in truth, so I should have written about my experiences and what was happening to me right now, which is A black woman living in America, “she explains.
She adds: “I was also a black woman who sang country music in a genre that is very, very pro-mug. It is extremely difficult, and it was important for me to just sing about it.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Guyton opened up about the “unreal” experience of recently gaining opportunities to perform with Ringo Starr. She was among several other music stars in her, she was joined by the Beatles legend on stage on one of his sold out shows in Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium earlier this month.
“That wasn’t on my bingo card, for sure. That wasn’t what I thought it would happen to me,” she says about the moment of a pinch. “It was just unreal, to be honest, like unreal. I would never think it would happen to me.”
Guyton says that among such “extremely talented musicians” and sharing the stage with Starr, 84, was the highlight of a career that is “really, really needed”.
“[Starr] It really applies to peace and love, and that’s the case, and I really needed it, “he notes.
